I recently heard about this place and I was interested to hear more about it. My wife and I wanted to head down on a week day with the dog and enjoy the beach and trails. I heard dogs are welcome - is this true? |

Also watch out for the red-tailed foxes. They are plentiful there and semi-tame in certain parts of park and, fun as it is to spot them, you wouldn't want your dog getting into a scrap with one. Foxes can be rabid. You can probably ask for advice at the entrance to the park, or better yet, make a phone call ahead of time. You can probably find a number on the web. It's a very lovely beach, as nice as people say. Especially if this beautiful weather holds. |

I go there all the time, never saw a fox but wouldn't dought it. The poison ivy is fine if you stick to the beach. There's a Crab place on the right before you enter (Capt. Billys?). Great garlic Crabs, totaly worth a try. Bring plenty of food / drinks for the beach. The better spots are miles from a snack bar. |

My parents have a shore house just a few blocks from the entrance to IBSP (in South Seaside Park), so i've been going down there since i was born. I usually go to the beach at the corner of our street, which is separate from IB, but I do know you pay to enter IBSP by the carload. On the really nice weekends, it gets full, so you need to get there earlier in the day. If you're interested, give a call to the park service before you go. They offer a bunch of free excursions and classes - surf fishing early in the morning, kayak/canoe trips around nearby islands, walks on the beach at night where they point out the different lights, etc. I actually just read at the url below that they offer horseback riding during the off-season, which i didn't know. If i recall correctly, there are some endangered species of birds that hang out there as well. As far as food, there's a takeout place called Berkley's right at the gate with great fried seafood platters. (The restaurant upstairs isn't worth it.) But better than Berkley's is Bum Rogers across the street which Brett referenced - if you like seafood (especially crab and mussels), butter, garlic, and beer, you'll dig it. I think my husband married me just so he could keep going there every weekend. Oh, and as for dogs - i don't know their policy. Sometimes we walk all the way to the end to the barnegat inlet (you can see the lighthouse in LBI across the way), and we'll go through stretches with lots of trucks, or fishermen, or dogs. It might be that they let dogs in during certain hours or in certain areas. Contact info for you to find out for sure is at the url below. http://www.state.nj.us/dep/seeds/island.htm |

Just so you all know, except for today and one day last week, the weather down the shore has been better than at home! I guess the ocean breezes have been keeping the clouds away! |
