We are in the process of planning a kitchen remodel and are overwhelmed with the choices (and prices!) of kitchen cabinets. We are now investigating some lower-priced brands, but are concerned about how long they will hold up. Here's my question: what should I be looking for to determine the quality of kitchen cabinets? I realize the type of wood is one factor. What about hinges? Types of drawers? Thickness? Anything else to look for? Anything to be wary of? Thanks. |

We've just finished this evaluation (we're checking references right now) and I agree--it was a daunting task--too many choices and not sure whom to trust. Then we wonder, if there are problems after installation, who will provide good service? So many questions... We went with Armstrong/Bruce cabinets. They are very well built and offer many different styles. If you plan on granite or stone counters be sure you are getting the right cabinets to support the weight. Most of the lower end cabinets cannot support granite or stone counter tops. Things to look for are 3/4 inch shelves vs. 1/2 inch and solid plywood sides vs. particle board. They also offer many drawer styles and construction variations. We went with the solid plywood sides and birch wood for the strength and chose the 1/2 inch shelves to keep costs down. Hope this helps |

We went with a company called Forever Cabinetry. They had a very wide selection from stock to custom cabinets and are great at showing you all the different options. We ended up going with a low/moderate priced cabinet and it looks amazing. His secret is using great trim work to enhance the look of less expensive cabinets. He also has come back 3 times (after we paid him) to tweak some stuff we wanted changed. I recommend them highly. The guys name is Mike Minich at Forever Cabinetry. He was tremendous. 973-300-9061 Andy |

Thanks! All of this info is very helpful. We do not want to spend a fortune on cabinets. The layout and flow of the kitchen is more important to us than having high-end cabinetry. But we don't want something that will fall apart in a couple of years, either. Anyway, we are now investigating the Thomasville line of cabinets that are available at HD. Anyone know anything about that line? We would only purchase at HD -- our own contractor would install. |

I don't know much about cabinets, maybe someone else has better info. HD usally carries two or three types of the same cabinets. The diffrence is the hardware. A friend of mine sugested that you buy the cheeper model saving a few bucks. And then replacing the hardware in a year or two, it's inexpensive if you do it yourself. |
