Call us crazy, but having just moved here we are having a terrible time finding a good pizza place. We were partial to the brick oven pizza at Grimaldi's in Hoboken (the Patsy's of NYC) and can't seem to find anything close. Does anyone have a good pizza place to recommend (where you could possibly get a beer too??)

People have been recommending Star Tavern forever and we still have yet to go. It's in West Orange. I like the small bar pies best at Bunny's in So. Orange. Quincey's in West Orange has good pizza and pitchers of Bass. Neither Bunny's or Quincey's is a "pizza place" like Patsy's though.

Try Sun Tavern at 1072 Route 22 in Mountainside. Take Valley to Springfield Avenue. Springfield out to Route 22 West. It's less than a mile up the road on the right ...

Spanky,

We like the Resevoir's Pizza in South Orange, and also ALL the food (and pizza) at the Village Trattoria on Inwood in Maplewood, across from the Fleet bank on Maplewood Ave. Try their fish or chicken specials posted daily on the bulletin board.

Welcome to Maplewood!

I second the recommendation for the Reservoir. Their pizza is wonderful. I think the restaurant is BYOB. Not positive--we usually get delivery.

Star Tavern is awesome...well worth a 15-minute drive. It's a big, raucous loud place that's perfect for kids and adults alike, with beer. Incredible pizza with a brick oveny taste. Not too expensive. Great for bringing together a large group. High tolerance for screaming kids.

What about places closer to MW? WE like Martys for delivery and that place in the village next to the fish market and Kings.

We've tried all the pizza places around and the Village Trattoria beats them all hands down. Don't go anywhere else!

The next time at Star - hold your pizza vertical for only 2 seconds. The cheese on the pizza will be in your lap within 1 second. Enjoy!

my vote also goes to the trattoria for pizza without beer, and bunnies for pizza and beer.

I always seem to loose with Marty's. Customer service = 0.

Jersey Tomatoes are back in season. Try a pizza from Bunny's with jersey tomatoes, you'll be back for more. If your budget minded, don't forget the ALL YOU CAN EAT gourmet pizza buffet every monday and tuesday nights from 5:00 to 8:30pm. Cost per person $5.25 plus tax. Buffet includes salad or soup. Sorry, drinks are extra.

If you do venture into Bunny's...ORDER a pizza, and NOTHING else. I had dinner there (no pizza )and was SICK afterwards!

I've eaten the STAR pizza over in W.O. too, and thought it to be nothing special...

I love Bunny's pizza, but I like the rest of their food as well; my husband and I have have appetizers, pasta, burgers, and sandwiches there, all tasty and -- I'm happy to report -- with no ill after affects.

Spanky, forget it. I've tried for years to find terrific pizza around here and it's just been a search in vain. Is it too much to ask? The best I've been able to find is the brick oven pizza place in Summit, right near the train station. Order the 4-cheese with extra gorganzola -- very good.

I like Bunny's pizza, too. With a mug of Yuengling. And last time I checked, MOL is on the computer near the bar, which is convenient.

I like Bunny's pizza too -- been going there since college. My five year old says it's the "world's best."

Back in my SHU days, it was with a cold Pabst or Bud. Now that I can afford the extra buck, it's with a Sam Adams.

If you like the crust a little thicker, ask for double dough at Bunny's. While you're at it, if you like your Yuengling a little taller, ask for a pint.

Oh my God, are the people who think that there is a lack of good pizza insane???? I live in the in Cincinnati where Donato's, LaRosa's, and Pizza Hut are considered good pizza. My poor father drives 15-20 minutes away to get pizza from some guys who got their recipe from their uncle in north Jersey. You guys don't realize how good you have it.

When we first moved here my father called to order one, this is how the conversation went:

dad: I'd like to order one large plain pie.
worker: Ummm, sir we sell pizza, not pies.

Of the places that deliver, we like Maplewood Pizza. They seem to be one of the few places that actually uses fresh mushrooms. However, having grown up in Livingston, I still get cravings for Camarrata's pepperoni pizza. They use long, thick strips of spicy pepperoni. Unfortunately, they don't deliver to Maplewood, and they don't have seating there, so I usually have to find an excuse to show up at my parents' house with a pizza.

Ditto the Maplewood Pizza recommendation -- for simple, basic, non-gourmet pizza -- the kind I remember getting from my neighborhood pizza joints growing up in the city in the 70's and 80's -- they're the best in town. Also delicious chicken parm sandwiches, and veggie rolls. Mmmm, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

The Best Pizza depends on your mood:
For the "one slice is a meal" variety, we get the Resevoir's Super (peppers, onions, mushrooms, pepperoni, sasauge, meatballs..) For your basic "bar pie" you can't beat Bunny's. For variety (ie Buffalo Wing, Cheesesteak etc.) pizza, go to the Trattoria. Finally, we have yet to find a white clam sauce pizza (with extra garlic) that rivals The Star's.

Recently in from Brooklyn, my wife and I have been enjoying Gencarelli's in West Orange. They make a great Hawaiian Pizza and they offer a $5 plain large pizza - pick-up only. It's also a nice place to eat in (byob) and then go next door to Crossroads for ice cream (no crowds and plenty of room to lounge).
