The U.S. Park Rangers Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police issued its third annual survey of the 10 most dangerous National Parks. Ninth on the list is the Edison Historic Site located in nearby West Orange, NJ: <<9. Edison Historic Site, New Jersey: Troubles of the big city, from a soaring murder rate to gang activity, has this small park surrounded, and rangers outmanned and outgunned. Rangers are denied pepper spray, shotguns and rifles, and access to a dispatch, despite being assigned to work without backup in an area of growing urban crime. Threatened by vandals and burglars, the park is closed to visitors, with Edison's irreplaceable treasures under siege behind a fence. Yet there is no 24-hour law enforcement presence, or even a burglar alarm to protect the historic artifacts, some made by the hands of Thomas Edison himself.>> http://www.rangerfop.com/danger03.htm http://www.nps.gov/edis/

I think that's a bunch of BS. Actually, it's a BIG BUNCH OF BS. Under siege, my arse. What a load of stuff. The park/museum is fenced in and the rangers are inside the buildings. Not much risk there. The park/museum is presently closed to visitors because it is being renovated ... The Edison Museum is a wonderful NJ treasure and something we should all be proud of. Shame on anyone who would spread this kind of crap.

The shameful crap spreader is Jonathan F. Miller, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of America Online. The listing of the "10 Most Dangerous National Parks" appeared on AOL's Welcome Page yesterday. Thanks to Mr. Miller, this shameful BIG BUNCH OF BS crap was spread to millions. Here's hoping your arse will soon be released of its siege.

I'm always suspicious of "news items" not citing sources. |

The author appears to be a union rep for park rangers. My sense is he's never been to the Edison Historical site. Fairly pathetic journalism for AOL/Time Warner to run this as news. |

Dave: To AOL/Time Warner, add the NY Times, the BBC and Reuters. Isn't there some sort of pattern emerging? |

The only thing I can figure out (being that the Edison site is all indoors and closed to the public and has been for some time) is that the rangers are killing one another and looting the place. Looks like most news sources removed it. I can't find it on NY Times, BBC or Reuters. |

The author is clearly lobbying for more rangers to be hired, and to have them more heavily armed. To that end, they're hyping any possible threats at these sites. The neighborhood is heavily industrial and while it seems a little spooky at night because it's nearly totally deserted, to call it "under siege" is hyperbole. Many of us from Maplewood regularly venture into that neighborhood after dark to visit Max Daniels' rock & roll club, which is about 300 yards down the street from the Edison site. If these sort of reports keep tourists from the site after it reopens, that would truly be a shame. |

Anita Smith: Er, actually, you fall into the category of "shameful crap spreader" by posting this in the first place ... Sorry. I'm just calling 'em like I see 'em. ML1: I appreciate your futures in shameless self-promotion ... Max's is safe. 3rd Gear plays Max's. 3rd Gear is safe ... You're killing me #6 ... When the Edison Museum does re-open, you should all take the kids. Edison was brilliant and the museum wonderful.

If I remember the details correctly (we all know how contributors and readers of MOL are sticklers for the truth and exacting details )the WO version of the News Record had an article last summer about a significant Springfield Ave. type face lift for the Edison Lab area of Main Street. A pedestrian friendly "town square" is to be built adjoining the Edison site. WO is going to relocate and expand the children's portion of their library system by renovating portions of the old battery factory (the big yellow building) that is adjacent to the historic site. In addition, the business area between Edison and Eagle Rock Ave. will get new sidewalks and lighting. WO will also solicit proposals from family friendly businesses to open new or relocate existing stores. It will be interesting to compare progress and results among WO, So and Maplewood's revitalization programs in the coming furure. |
