I got a letter today that says that Trenton is going to give Maplewood $200,000 in property releif. "This property tax relief goes directly to your town's budget, resulting is a direct decrease in your property tax" Can this really mean that our property tax is going to go down? Somehow it seems too good to be true. What is $200,000 going to do?

well figure a population of 10,000 thats 20 bucks a pop. Im gonna buy a nice steak. Thanks but I found that letter a tad insulting. Seriously. I imagine someone out here has the total number of properties on the tax books, but I cannot imagine that it will amount to more than 100 dollars per property give or take. And thats just not enough to make me thankful for very much if our cops are quitting and leaving in droves. |

Subtract the money spent by the governor's office on staff time, printing & mailing the letters. |

Reminds me of the West Wing episode where Donna asks Josh what happened to the money that was appropriated but not spent. Donna says "I want my money back." Josh says "we're Democats - we don't do that." |

I doubt the money will actually go to decreasing our property taxes. More likely, it will go to fund some special program or study that would not have been been fundable otherwise. If this money is used for an ongoing expense, then our taxes will actually go up next year when we have to meet the cost of what the $200,000 funded without the aid of extraordinary relief from the State. |

What made me really wonder about this letter is that it was addressed to me (alone) personally. I jointly own my home with my spouse and all related financials are jointly held/filed, etc. What's up with that? |

What is your political party affiliation, if any? What is your spouse's? Elected officials sometimes send that kind of correspondance primarily to registered members of their own party. |

Duncanrogers: The $200,000 returned to Maplewood by Gov McGrevious, and not us, comes to about $29.85 per home (estimated 6,700 homes in Maplewood.). Don't know about the 10,000 figure you mentionned, but try 23,000 residents and slightly over 13,000 registered voters. ( and to think that johndavenport- see his post of 7/28/03), was mocking GWB on the $800 refund he received! Big difference, johndavenport! The $800 was received by each of us to use and not some amount paid to the elected professional spenders in Maplewood. Let's see I pay $11,400 in property taxes in Mpwd. Do I want $800, or $29.85, and that is only if the Committee chooses to apply it as revenue to the budget? One more thing JohnD, 55% of the gov's payment will go to the schools. That's because our property taxes allot 55% to the schools. So $110,000 will go to the school budget. This will allow My Least Favorite MPWD BOSE Member(LLFMBM) to keep the administrative position you question and for you to get two young low paid teachers, Everyone will be happy, especially you and MLFMBM.

The $200,000 was applied for by the Town Committe to fund the study of potentially buying the Verizon building plus a possible down payment. It was an "extraordinary" expenditure which allowed the Town to apply for it. Our taxes will not go down but just go up a little less. Let's hope they down blow the money on something stupid. |

I know, but JohnD was crowing about the $800. Anything beats the McG's $29.85 see the other thread. |

So when the letter says that our property taxes are going down, that is false. What this town and state need is a revolution. The property tax situation is nuts, and the fact that we pay for the schools with our property tax in nuttier. The first thing we need to do is get rid of county government. I am sure that is a top heavy little party.

Buzzsaw, the revolution you mention began with the Democratic Primary, where have you been? It will continue with this years election. Fiscal prudence is needed in Maplewood, Essex County and the State of NJ, where property taxes are out of control. The BOE elections should begin to reflect this issue on a larger scale. BOE turnout is growing among voters, candidates will be forced to address spending, which has continued at too rapid a pace. Stay tuned. |

Just to fan the flames , the Post reports today that not only do NJ residents pay the most for insurance, we have the worst deal with the Fed, only getting .62 cents back for every $1.00 sent , the worst ratio in the nation. Throw the incumbents out , in a lot of cases both of their jobs, rewrite the constitution , eliminate county gov. centralize fire dept. take power away from the governors office & change sch. financing . I'm sick of hearing " well it's just the way it's allways been done". That will be enough ranting for today. |

Cedar: I haven't a clue. Just out of curiosity, whose name appears first on your real property tax records? |
