Ugh. I had to get a trellis and have it trimmed there. I waited at the saw for 1/2 hour at the head of a growing line. Those people in the orange aprons would come by occasionally and say they would be right with us. A guy went to find the "manager" to find out the deal. He came back totally bewildered. So I went to find the "manager", and someone directed me to this guy. Here's a rough transcript: Mem: "Are you the "manager" of this store?" "Manager" (as he turned away from a scream fest argument with another customer): "Yes mon, what can I do for you?" Mem: "You are not the manager of this store." "Manager": "Yes mon, I am. Why do you say that?" Mem: "Because this store is NOT being managed. Everyone all over this place is freaking out, and there is no saw man." "Manager": "I don't know where the saw mon is. Besides, mon, getting things sawed is a privelege we extend to customers at our discretion." Mem: "Hmmmm. Screw that. Get the saw man now, mon, there's about twenty steaming mad people waiting for him. And, you are NOT the manager of this store. You are an imposter. This place is out of control, and I am writing a letter about this to your CEO." (A wide eyed, admiring crowd had gathered by this point) "Manager": "Mon, you go ahead and write that letter to CEO, whatever CEO is, I don't care. Go ahead." Mem: "OK, Mr. Careless, I will. By the way, the CEO is the big giant "manager" of all this slop. This place s*cks! And it's not even because of bad management, because there is no management!" (The crowd murmers in agreement) Back at the saw, there is a huge line. Saw man finally shows up. I hate that place!!!

For months one of their front doors was out of order, like they didn't have the parts to fix it even though they're a hardware store. I'm a fan of the company nationally, but the Vauxhall branch is terrible. Their business model is sticking a couple of cashiers at the front of a huge warehouse. It annoys me how they want to require you to go in certain doors and out other ones so you're always miles from your car. Robert Little |

I use the one on 22 and the one on Rt. 10. Cleaner, nicer and they don't smell of hot dogs. |

The Vauxhall branched dropped the Nathan's stand to put in window air conditioner units. Now I can't even get a dog while I'm waiting in line. Robert Little |

I hate Home Depot. They move in, with great service, low prices, and the promise of "one stop shopping" for everything. They put the local guys out of business, and then their great service goes to hell. I'll bet anything they have fewer people working out on the floor now than when they opened. I'd much prefer to go to Jaeger or the Millstone to shop for home/lawn stuff. |

They may not have a saw man or enough cashiers, but they've always got a security guy at the door to check your receipt and make sure you're not sneaking off with something. It gives me a really nice, dignified feeling. Where's the nearest Lowe's? I'd like to give them a try. |

I recomend that everyone boycott Home Depot, Wallmart, K-mart, Costco, and the Malls. While these businesses are more efficient and provide the consumer with better prices and more convenience, they have been killing communities all across the country. It is time that we stop only worrying about our wallets and start considering the impact that our actions are having on our communities |

I go the extra mile and use the one on 22. Much cleaner, better inventory and service people. We have brought ourselves to go farther for the better grocery stores, have we not? I can count on my hands how many times I have walked out of the SA store after I threw my items down in disgust because there was one register open and 100 people on line or they didnt have everything I went for because of their poor inventory management. That store is the worst depot I have ever been to. MEM, when you write the letter please send it to me so I can co sign it.

I agree with you the Home Depot in Vauxhall is terrible. You can never get anyone to help you and the workers don't know what they are talking about. I like the one on Rt. 22 and Rt 10 very friendly workers. |

Oh thank God it's not just me! How horrible is the staff there? I LOVED it when it first opened--now it's the same service you get at any store, where the clerks are standing around and, when you do get their attention, are rude and ignorant about your situation. I'm with Tom--where's Lowes?

Here is my Springfiled Ave - Home Depot - Top 10 reasons you can't get any help when you are there. 10. I just complete credit card applications, that's all. 9. I don't know anything about pesticides, but if you want to know about tiles, I can help you with that. 8. I'll be right back, I just have to finish with these 8 customers. 7. Q: Where are your "straight" pieces of wood, these are all warped. A: On the next truck. 6. Seasonal items are only in stock...out of season. 5. The pressure treated wood contains arsenic (still!) - Sign above states - CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE WILL NOT BE PROVIDED DUE TO POISON RISK. 4. The purpose of the customer self check out is so that Home Depot doesn't have to provide customer service, besides if it broke down no one knows how it works anyways. 3. All our Firewood comes wet, that's just how it is. Wood gets wet you know. 2. Let me page someone for the gas grill cannister exchange. They should be out with the key soon......ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. and the number one reason is..... 1. Hello...how are you welcome to Home Depot...No, I am sorry I can't help you I am just the front entrance customer greeter. [Orange Apron Names Withheld To Protect The Innocent] TheVillagePub

If anyone else cares to post their Union Home Depot experience here please do so, I will be printing this thread and mailing it to Robert Nardelli, CEO of Home Depot. We CAN make a difference. |

I have no recent HD experience. I stopped going in there about a year and a half ago. And they are not getting my business at another HD; I go to Sears Hardware, local garden centers, lumber stores, etc. And as soon as a Lowe's opens in the area, I will give them a try. The employees are rude and unknowledgeable; the inventory unacceptable. |

I loved Home Depot when they opened their first store in our area up on Route 10 in East Hanover. Back then the company had a commitment to customer service and hired people who were knowledgeable about the products they sold. They also, I believe, paid decent money to retired plumbers, electricians, etc. to work on the floor. The younger employees felt they had a future in a rapidly growing company. It is no wonder that within a couple of years they put Rickles, Channels, Mr. Goodbuys and God knows how many local hardware stores out of business. Unfortunately, times have changed and management took a different turn when profits began to be squeezed and growth stagnated. They cut back on help, were less willing to hire experienced people, etc. Service slipped at all their local locations, although more so at Union than at East Hanover and Route 22. Personally I like then new self-service check out, when it is working. You can get in and out very quickly once you get the hang of scanning and if they have what you are looking for in stock, a major issue at Union. This summer I couldn’t find brads, 4d nails and other very common items. My wife was at the Route 10 store several months ago buying blinds and indicated to the clerk that she didn’t go to Union because of the service, cleanliness and stock issues and the clerk indicated that she heard this a lot. I blame the problems in Union not on the employees, most of whom are very pleasant, if inexperienced, but on management. There seems to be very little training of the employees and morale, to use a technical business word, sucks!

I note that they all wear aprons that read "I work in every department" (or something like that), but many insist that they cannot answer a question about the department you are asking about. On the other hand, some employees can be very helpful if you treat them with respect. They should definitely open more registers though. My complaint from my most recent visit is actually about the customer behind me in line. The item I wanted to purchase cost $20 according to the sign in the aisle and it rang up for $40. The man behind me screamed at me the entire time that it took the cashier to check the price, which turned out, what a surprise, to be $20 (of course, having more registers open might have prevented that experience). |

village pub, CCA treated wood contains arsenic, it's being phased out this year. Just like hooters, the "A" travel team comes in and sets up the store, then they're gone and you're stuck with the scrubs. |
