Wow, my car insurance just went up about $27 a month, because I moved from Edison to Maplewood. I guess crime is higher here. Or the actuarial tables say it is, but is it? My insurance is with State Farm. Tom Reingold

Mr. Reingold, didn't you used to be Tommy? Anyway.. Yes you now live in the same county as Newark, one of the car theft capitals of the country. Thats what you are paying for. |

There was a thing in the NJ section of the Times last week (?) to the effect that the actuarial tables are decades old and in the process of getting updated. Not sure if it will help or hurt.....but the suggestion was that the rates in some of the western burbs are artificially low at this point. |

Tommy, Check out Liberty Mutual or Prudential. I think they are better then State Farm. Sadly enough, when I moved from Manhattan my car insurance only went down by $500/yr. |

If you or either parent were ever in the military, check USAA out. |

Try PLI (Private Lines Insurance)in Warren -- we went with them based on a recomemndation from MOL, and their rates for our two cars (new Civic, old Wrangler) were close to half of what State Farm wanted to charge us, for even more coverage. |

I'm not sure if State Farm is writing new policies in New Jersey. Last year, we were dropped from them despite both of us having clean driving records. We went with Encompass Insurance and are paying about the same as State Farm, I think. The agent is Warren Reiner in Springfield. |

I used insurancestart.com last year to find a new insurance company when AIG doubled my premium for no clear reason. My premium was cut in half and my coverage levels doubled. Give it a try. |

If you are a AAA Member for at least 6 months you can get insurance from them at a much lower rate. It's even worth the $71 membership fee. You also get discounts on hotels and car rentals, as well as who to call for road side assitance or towing. check it out |
