I'm reading the paper about the latest "Nigerian scam", and lo and behold I was hit with a solicitation for it on this very site about 6 months ago!

I had posted a parking spot for rent in the classified section, and I got a cryptic email from someone who said he was abroad, wanted to but the parking spot with a cashier's check, and have it *shipped* to him. I wrote back telling him he must have misunderstood the ad, and got no response. I'm glad because it turns out to be a nasty little scam, in which they send you a check for too much, and ask you to write them a check refunding the difference. Guess which check isn't real.

For more details, you can check out his site:

Please be careful of things like this.

Speaking of scams - I was trying to find the thread about the "Do Not Call" list but it seems to have been attic-ed. Got this e-mail from a friend of mine who works for the Att'y General - I think it's accurate info:

"I need your help stopping a new telemarketing scam, one that is intended to defeat the effect of the new Do Not Call Registry that we’ve all so happy about. Please be on the lookout for a card in the mail asking you to vote for your favorite soda – Coke or Pepsi – but then saying in very VERY small print that by returning the card you waive your right to be free from telemarketing calls even if you signed up for the Do Not Call Registry."

Yet another reason to favor hops-based beverages
