It's so interesting to me that people who once agreed on so many issues are now so wholly divided. Why? Because of taxes. It all comes down to dollars. I'd sooner pay my high taxes or move to a place that feels more affordable than put a vice between me and my friends because of money. I realize that we all have our vested interests in the outcome of the valuation but lets not turn ugly towards one another. |

Exercisenut, You say "Double Amen!" - but, shouting accusations of racism when totally unwarranted is very harmful to unity. Being one of those who lives on the "west side", and among those who feels the re-evaluation process is flawed, I was personally insulted by your accusations on the other string. Those accusations were "ugly", to borrow a description from Pnp. I can assure you that my views on the tax issue are in no way based on racism. I urge you to please think twice before making such accusations. |

Mwacks, I by no means am accusing all westsiders of being racist and unfair. My concern has been that some (and I mean some) of the postings over the last month have had some racist undertones. There are some bitter people out there. I agree that most residents of Maplewood, wherever they live, are hard working people and aren't bigots. My complaint is that it is hard for anyone who isn't making a ton of money to live here nowadays. If property values have increased a great deal on the westside, people who live there have a choice to protest the reval and if nothing changes, consider moving to another area of town. You should do pretty well if you sell, and that is why the taxes for these homes should reflect the selling prices. But they should be assessed fairly. If certain areas have been carrying an unfair proportion of the tax burden, whatever area of town, things should be redistributed. I do understand that a huge increase in taxes all at once is a huge stress for anyone regardless of economic or ehtnic background, and should be considered when the increases happen. I also wonder if people on the westside would be at the town council meetings to show support for people who's property values are not increasing nearly as much because of their home's location. |
