What I find most disturbing about the entire reval process is the sense that the TC defers to a 3rd-party to communicate to taxpayers. Evidence: Last week I called Galante's office to ask why I was not allowed to have a copy of the appraisal worksheet that Certified shared with me during my review meeting. I was told to call Certified to obtain one because enough people complained and they are now providing copies. While I thanked the woman I spoke to, I also asked if anyone from the town was ever going to inform the taxpayers of this decision. Other than "no" she had no other explanation. I called Certified and was told to send a SASE and they would provide it!! I got it yesterday and it is looked like a sanitized version of what was shown to me during my review meeting. More evidence: Yesterday a homeowner met with the same Certified representative that I did (the red haired fellow with the beard)and was asked what he thought his home was worth. His answer was about $100,000 less than the Certified value. The representative wrote it down and said "they" (implying the assessor) would probably split the difference!! Mayor DeLuca and the TC, do you find that answer outrageous? During my meeting the same person from Certified told me that the three areas with "problems" will be dealt with by the town. Who is in control of this enormously flawed process? He also asked me the same question about what I thought the value of my home is. He started to write my answer and then abruptly stopped and erased what I said - and it was less than $100,000!!!! Mayor DeLuca and the TC, what is the right answer? I would like the Mayor and other members of the TC to answer the question of responsibility. Who is running this charade? Why is the TC tolerating a 3rd-party making up the rules and communicating information about a legislated process? Why do I find out more information from a 3rd-party (right or wrong) and from the local newspaper than I do from our elected officials? Why hasn't the Mayor sent a letter to taxpayers with clear, definitive information about what's right and wrong about the process. Is this really turning out to be a negotiation between individuals and the town? Will everyone be dealt with fairly - whether they complain or not? I thought I saw a comment from Mayor DeLuca in last week's paper saying something about individuals having to take the responsibility for dealing with their own issues about the valuation. That's fair, but not when the process is unfair and misleading. Too much is being made up by too many people who are not responsible for the process, leaving me to believe it is terribly flawed. |

Papa.... The election was just two months ago. What are you talking about. The reval was already in process and was required by law to be done. And why would someone worry about what is basically a volunteer position if they are reelected or not. |
