The rumor is true - the race is on. There's still plenty of time to dust off your running shoes and get ready for the 3rd annual Maplewood in Motion 5k - which is set for Sunday, October 26.

I sure hope all the chatter on this thread is no measure of the level of enthusiasm we can expect for this year's race. Each of the last two years we've had about 350 runners in the 5k and more than 100 kids in the fun run.

Registration forms will be available around town and at the train station, and will be distributed in kids' school backpacks mid-September. You'll also be able to get the form at maplewoodonline.com/roadrace, once the page is updated for this year, and from compuscore.com. Closer to raceday, there should also be a signup table outside Bagel Chateau on Saturday mornings.

Mercury/JJC, the page is getting updated shortly, and the form is being forwarded to compuscore - and will show up this week in kids' backpacks, but in case you're itchin' to fill it out, here's a copy:

Erlaur, how much of the money from the registration fees goes to Shelley's fund?

3mom - Everything in excess of the costs to put the race on. Two years ago, raceday was sunny so there were lots of last minute registrants on raceday - and the race was able to generate an excess $1000, which was given to the Maplewood Fund for 9/11. Last year was also sunny on race morning - so it had another $1000 "profit" that went to establish the Maplewood in Motion Recreation Department Scholarship Fund. Hopefully we'll have a good turnout so we can do the same or better for Shelley's fund.

erlaur- last year lots of kids eleven, twelve, thirteen, ran in the 5K, not the kiddy race. But the prize categories for 5K start at 18-24 I think. Any place winners for the youngins' this year?

LIZZYR - you can find the exact route and other information at http://www.maplewoodonline.com/roadrace

FFOF - Due to the limited audience staying for the awards portion last year, and the number of possible award categories, the plan this year doesn't include specific awards other than the top overall finishers. That said, I do believe there will be recognition of unique accomplishments.

How many people participate in the race? Is it bigger than the 10k that was the Mapleleaf run?

For both runnings of the Maplewood in Motion race, there have been 350 people - and there were 100 kids in the Fun Run.

I heard that the winner from the past two years - Anselm Lebourne (olympian) is not going to be at the race due to another obligation. If this truly the case - THE WINNER'S CIRCLE is looking a lot more attainable!

That's the word. So Anselm is leaving the field wide open for us. Here are last year's results:
http://www.compuscore.com/cs2002/october/maplewd1.htm

There are 260 people signed up so far to run this Sunday - with registered 5k runners from 6 years old up to 78 years old.

Anyone willing to go out on a limb and try to guess which neighbor might be among the fastest runners in town?

For those procrastinators who aren't already registered, what time would you recommend getting to the registration table in order to have time to take care of the paperwork, negotiate the line, if any, and be on time for the actual race? My daughter, who is a budding runner thanks to the Girls on the Run program, has decided late in the game that she would like to do this and we are trying to figure out the best strategy.

Plan to get to the Civic House by 8:15 AM (though you can come as early as 7:30). Don't forget, you have an extra hour tonight since we're setting the clocks back.

As far as how registrations are going - we're up to 350, even before race-day registrations.
