I know I’m not the best driver in the world. I have been known to break speed limits on a regular basis, and tailgate a slow driver. But for some reason I go absolutely BONKERS when people don’t use there blinkers. Has anyone ever gotten a ticket for this? |

Rarely. I agree, there are many times when not signalling is quite discourteous. For example, I'm on a minor road, waiting at a stop sign, ready to turn left. There are two cars coming, one from the left, one from the right. The one from the left is closer to the intersection than the one from the right. Suddenly, the one from the left turns right, onto the street I'm on. If he had signalled, I would have pulled out long before he reached the intersection. Now, the car from the right is close to the intersection, or he's in it already. There's a long line of cars behind him. I have to wait a long time now, only because I didn't know that the guy from the left was turning. Mostly, people don't focus on the effects their actions have on others. It's not that they want to inconvenience others. They just don't think about it. Tom Reingold

...be careful of the driver that keeps his right turn signal on and keeps going straight. This is why so many cars now have the beeping sound when you don't turn your blinker off right away. Sometimes it's best to wait it out, or go to a street that you know has a traffic light. |

A word to the wise. When you are at a stop sign and a car approaches from the left with its right turn signal on, don't trust it. I have seen several near misses at the corner of Baker and Ridgewood Road when this happens and the car on Ridgewood continues through the intersection. CRRRRAAAAASSSSHHHHHH |

My other favorite is when a car slows down to make a right turn and the following car passes on the left at a high rate of speed. So you have to look not only at the car with the signal on but at any cars behind that car. |

OK one area where I DON'T turn on my signal till the last minute is at the Prospect / Garfield / Tichenor intersection in SO -- traveling southbound on Prospect and making a left turn on to Garfield. If there is someone sitting there trying to make a left turn from Garfield onto Prospect, they invariably seem to think that they have the right of way and will pull right out in front of me even though they are at a stop sign and I have none. If they don't know too soon I'm planning on turning left, they sit put. And probably hate me for it to boot.

In that case, argon, you can block the guy on Garfield by occupying the intersection until you can make your turn. This is perfectly acceptable. It's OK to enter the intersection before it's clear to make your turn. I think that's better than withholding a signal. Tom Reingold
