Does anyone know where I might donate a four year old computer? I'd hate to throw it into the trash. Any info would be appreciated. |

You might want to check with some of the local Maplewood/South Orange public schools. I have helped my company donate old computers to the Clinton elementary school. |

Throwing old computers in the trash is not an option anyway. I'm the Network Administrator for Morris County, and the Morris County MUA has just announced a computer hardware and TV drop-off day, April 14. Because of the costs associated with reclaiming the materials, you actually have to pay $3 to drop off a monitor or CPU, and $5 for the combo. I'm not sure if Essex County MUA has a comparable program. Computers and TVs and even most computer accessories cannot be trashed because they contain heavy metals on the circuit boards and substantial lead and other bad stuff in the CRT and TV glass. I just bought my 3rd generation laptop, and am wondering the same thing: where to give away my previous laptop where it can be useful (*and* I can get a charitable deduction!) |

Ellen: With a laptop, I'd definitely check with the local schools. There may be a teacher who could use one for his/her non-permanent classroom. We have several teachers who shift from room to room every period, who would love to have their own computer in their classroom for either the students to use, or for curriculum related information. Is it a MAC or PC? |
