--a strong Neighborhood Watch is definitely in the cards.--

Are there any Neighborhood Watch programs in place in Maplewood??? And what do they entail??? I'm definitely down with starting one up so count me in. I've never been associated with one so I don't know what's involved but I'm willing to get the ball rolling.

Actually, it's the best way to protect your neighborhood, bar none! Call the Maplewood Police Department Monday and they should be able to refer you to someone. Good luck.

There are a lot of Neighborhood Watches in Maplewood and it is really easy to start one. The first step is to find out whether there is already a neighborhood watch which includes your house.

If not, begin by contacting all of the homeowners on your street and asking them if they would be willing to participate. This isn't going to work if you are the only one on your block who wants one.

Make a list of all the homeowners, everyone who lives in each house, phone number, e-mail address, make, model, and license plate number of each vehicle they drive, and any other information such as home based businesses, regular visitors, etc. that might be helpful. Duplicate the listing and make sure that each participating household has a copy.

Hold a meeting at someone's home. The largest house on the block usually works well. Invite everyone to attend. Assign responsibility for organization, updating information, hours of availability, etc.

Then call in the police department to register your group and arrange a meeting with your group and establish ground rules.

Questions to consider:

Do you want the neighborhood watch to know when people will be away on vacation?

Do you want to establish a buddy system where people will have keys to each other's homes in case of emergency?

Do you want to set up a system where members of the neighborhood watch will pick up newspapers, take out garbage, etc. for those members who are away so the homes will look more lived in?

Good luck with your pursuit!
