i highly recommend art's B&B. My parents drove down from boston and stayed over for the weekend for a large family party. their room was beautiful with their own private bathroom. it seriously is uncomparable to any other form of lodging in the area. the town should be embarrassed for the way they have treated your establishment. we hope to be able to use your beautiful home for many years in the future

Is that just hearsay Mem, or are you too spreading rumors?

Either way, my pancakes are well worth the wait!

BTW, thanks Jim, your family was great...

We have also had people stay at Les Saisons and they all loved it there. We are very happy to see that staying at the B&B is an option once again.

My family and I stayed at the B&B for a week during extensive work on our house - we loved it!

Glad you're back in business, Art!

Also glad to hear that Les Saisons is up and running again. We had friends visiting from Seattle a couple of years back who couldn't stay with us because of cat allergies (or they just hate cats). Anyway, we put them up at Les Saisons and they had nothing but great things to say about it.

Art,

We are one of your new neighbors and have heard a great deal about this "business". I would like to come over and check it out. Since we are very close to your property I do have an interest in any quality of life issues that may arise. Do you mind if I give you a call also?

HS,

“We would love to attend other get-togethers. Oh hummmm. !!”

You can see, I’ve noticed your posts before. We also enjoy occasional get-togethers, and would love to have you over anytime for a look around and some conversation. Just give us a call...

BTW, feel free to bring along family or friends for pancakes one morning, or seeing as how you're a neighbor, we could always do a little social (non-business) evening on one of the patio's or out by the pool? We always enjoy meeting new people in town.

Thanks, I appreciate you asking. Art

Thanks so much. I will definitely give you a call. I am glad that you noticed us but just so there is no confusion this is the Republican not the Democrat of the couple...Looking forward to speaking and meeting with you as is my partner ( the Democrat)

We had friends stay at Les Saisons before the controversy erupted and they could not have been happier. If Art agrees to have no large commercial gatherings there and the noise ordinances are enforced, I don't see what reasonable grounds anyone has to complain. From viewing this from afar it appears to be a neighbor's quarrel that has lost all sense of perspective. Les Saisons is a great asset to the community. I am dumbfounded why the town is in this litigation. If there is a good reason for opposing Les Saisons, I have not heard it.

Thanks Davel,

Art has already agreed not to have any large outdoor "Commercial Gatherings" again...

BTW, the latest update on the legal battle is to chalk one up for the town...

The Judge ruled this morning to remand the matter of abandonment, of the non-conforming use of the B&B, back to the Board of Adjustment for another new hearing.

I have already instructed my attorney to appeal his decision after making a preliminary motion to reconsider, just as the town did at today's hearing. (It's only more money, and hey, turn around is fair play)

For all intent and purpose, we're looking at least another six months to a year unless somehow we are able to reach a equitable settlement and end this circus....

I just have to wonder how much taxpayer money is being spent prosecuting this case against one of Maplewood's premier businessmen. I plan to ask this question at the next Township Committee Meeting. I certainly hope there can be a settlement very soon.

I think too much, but it's an interesting question Ed...

I believe those of us directly involved in this matter are doing what we feel we need to do. The problem is ONLY Maplewood's leadership has the power to end this matter through either negotiation, or legislation.

Sure, the neighbors can continue to pursue their position in the courts on their own, but the town doesn't have to continue spending their time and the towns money any longer.

1. Does the TC want to see more bed and breakfast homes established in some of the older, larger homes in town?

2. Does the TC believe residents would benefit by the services that would result in such a decision?

3. Does the TC want the added monetary benefits that would result in more economic development and tax ratables?

4. Does the TC want to participate in the new NJ State mandated 3% occupancy tax now available to local municipalities?

5. Has the TC previously expressed any interest in introducing an ordinance to permit B&B's in town?

I believe the answer to all the questions is YES! The only question I can't answer is when will it all happen?

Just to get a word in here, I've been over to Art's several times. The only noise that I have experienced is a bunch of barking dogs over the fence from the B&B and some lady screaming at me that I was on the property of an illegal business.

Some neighbors!

Sorry art, didnt mean any offense. When I have stayed in B&B's before I have often spoken with the owners about the seasonal nature of the buisness. Always really busy around college graduation times, in the foliage season (if in N.E.) that sort of thing.

I went to a gathering at Art's great B&B and there were these neighbors mowing their lawn, using the leaf blower and any other outdoor machinery that would make a racket - after dark!!! On purpose of course. Complete weirdos.

“Sorry Art, didn’t mean any offense.”

Well, now that you have my full attention, what did you mean Duncan?

Hey, you guys should know me well enough by now. I’m always interested in why anyone is interested in my business and me? Let me guess, was it because you were watching Channel 35 last night with all the other civic-minded residents of Maplewood? (There were only a few of us actually at the meeting.)

Was it by chance because at the PUBLIC COMMENT portion of the TC meeting, candidate Ken Pettis was also “publicly interested” in what’s happening with my bed and breakfast? Most people just pick up the phone and ask me. Really, I think I’ve been pretty publicly candid in this thread about the status of the B&B?

Anyway, I’m glad to hear you stayed at B&B’s before. They are so much nicer than big hotels and motels, don't you think? I mean friendly, interesting, historic, and add such a nice feeling to the community that you're visiting.

Look, if you’re really, I mean really interested in learning about the seasonal nature of my business, or how busy I am around college graduation times, or in the foliage season (if in N.E.) that sort of thing, then please come over for some pancakes some morning. I always love to sit around and share some small talk with neighbors, friends, and my guests.

FWIW, things have been quite pleasant on the home front all summer long. No noise, no complaints, and no trouble with the neighbors. It’s kind of what you would expect to find at a beautiful old bed and breakfast in one of the best places to live in America.

BTW HS, the invite still holds....

Art was kind enough to allow me to host an outdoor suprise birthday party with a total of 8 guests late this summer. He went out of his way to open his home to us. He picked me up at my home and drove back to his house and even pitched in to help me get the food ready. He took the time to show me thru the house.

We were a quiet group out on the lawn, causing no excessive noise, no music playing--just occasional laughing, some splashing in the pool and 1 poorly sung rendition of "Happy Birthday." This venue so impressed my guests that they talked about using the B&B for hosting a party themselves.

I was very impressed with the house and the accomadations that Art offers.

I know there has been debates, and controversy over allowing Art to stay in business but, I'm with Dave when he said " Les Saisons is a great asset to the community. I am dumbfounded why the town is in this litigation. If there is a good reason for opposing Les Saisons, I have not heard it."

I also want to note that during this quiet gathering, one neighbor decieded it was the best time to run his chainsaw--for at least an hour--altho I don't believe any trees were harmed during the time the chainsaw was running. This information should please GREENTREE.

Thank you Art for a very enjoyable afternoon.

You're welcome Jeanneh, your kids were all well behaved... BTW, that was very nice of you to make a donation to the children at Strawberry Fields.

For the record folks, Jeanneh is a friend and her two children’s birthday party was not a business event. We don't do party's for the public...

Oh well, this is one of the problems when you live in a beautiful home, and you're kind, generous, a great host, and have a lot of friends. Everyone always wants to bring their friends over!

I guess you wouldn't understand these kinds of things, now would you Luv2cruise....
