I am thinking of making an in-home gym in my basement. Does anyone know where to get good used, gym-quality equipment?

The problem with used equipment is that it is generally covered with a layer of slime from years of sweaty bodies hanging on the handrails. Gyms, understandably, are reluctant to sell such tainted goods because of the attendant health risks and consequent issues of liability. Probably the most cost effective and sanitary form of home exercise equipment, surprisingly, is the jump rope. You can easily burn a thousand calories an hour jumping rope (a small calorie counter can be attached to the hand grip). It's easily stored, can be moved from room to room. But the real beauty of the jump rope is that it can be washed with your regular laundry, although the experts do recommend the hot cycle with plenty of bleach. Good luck!

Howard,
My suggestion is not to build the gym until the tax issue is settled. Certified may increase the value of your home 200% if you put in some dumbells, unlike the voters of Maplewood.

I bought a solofex on EBAY for $300 with the leg and butterfly attachments. It was a little tricky finding one for sale close enough to pick up, but ultimately worth it. It was practically new and I saved about $800.

If you are still looking to do this, I have a good heavy duty (Gym type) tread mill we want to sell. It works great, except the heart rate monitor has gone out. Other than that call, come over, take a walk on it and see. George, 973-974-6735 Daytime.
