Everyone has raved about TJs. SO I go to the one in Florham Park. I don't get it. THe food's expensive and there really wasn't anything I wanted that I couldn't get at Kings or Whole Paycheck. What am I missing? |

I haven't said anything before but having checked out the one in Westfield once I was similarly mystified by what people are so excited about. |

You are missing the $1.99 (not $2.49 or $2.99 or $3.29) cello packs of baby spinach! The $1.99 (not $3.49) bags of granola! The delicious $1.99 (not $2.49) containers of TJ's hummus! The $2.99 (not $4.99) containers of pesto sauce! Not to mention all the wonderful prepared frozen foods -- turkey meatballs, chinese dumplings, burritos & enchiladas, risottos -- the list goes on and on, and they're all made with real ingredients (not chemicals) and very reasonably priced. You can't find everything there, true, but what they do have is generally excellent, and ALWAYS cheaper than Whole Foods. Trader Joe's rules!!! |

To "get it" you have to get the concept. It's not supposed to supplant Shop Rite, Whole Foods, or Kings. |

I don't get the Trader Joe's thing either. Are you supposed to shop there for meals or snack food? I'm guessing the latter. Looked like half the stock was birdfood when I was there. |

I like reading about all the ideas for Springfield Av. I have a few ideas to share, but I won't yet. Instead, I'll ask where the current plans are. I gather there's a development committee, with plans and funds. How can we read the plans? Tom Reingold

Dave, that made me chuckle. I go to TJ's once in a blue moon to buy heathier snacks for the kids but I think (this will be like the tenth time I've said this and no one ever responds!) we REALLY could use an Asian market or a produce stand on Springfield Ave.} |

Tom: Unfortunately, there really is no difinitive plan. That is part of the problem. One of the key campaign issues in this year's TC election is the contraversy over whether the Town should hire a full-time professional in economic development who can try to come up with and administer a comprehensive plan for SA. At this point, much is in the discussion stage and your suggestions are apt to be as good as anyone's. Fell free to post once you get your thoughts together. If you want some background on the issue, try reading the Springfield Avenue Urban Design and Economic Development Study. (Send me a private line if you want to borrow my copy.) Then take a little time to walk the length of SA and observe for yourself what businesses are there and how they seem to be doing. |

http://www.nj.com/search/index.ssf?/base/news-3/1060234399245220.xml?starledger? nex The above appeared in Thursday's Star Ledger. It is kinda interesting to note that the "coffe shop" mentioned earlier is in fact the famous NetNomads and the "Portugese restaurant" is Burnett Barbecue. I think the owner of NetNomads is, to the best of my knowledge, the first local business person to relocate to SA, which is still a gutsy move imho. |

The article Bobk noted, is interesting. For an area w/o a plan, there sure seems to be a lot going on. |

Bob, I'm not sure if she is the first, but I can assure you with all the improvements on the Avenue and the ever rising cost of rents in the village, she won't be the last... Her expanding variety of business services are highly professional, widely needed, and unlike Baker Street, she will now be totally visible to thousands of potential new customers daily. …you say a gutsy move, I say a brilliant move! Just the advertising exposure alone from this prime location on the corner of SA and Prospect Street makes total sense. Plus, besides being an Internet Cafe, where else can anyone go on the Avenue for a great cup of coffee, interesting conversation, and a tasty snack? There is a lot going on Nohero, and if you think about it, it's all pretty positive. Let me say this, NetNomads move is a great deal for SA and all of the other businesses around it. I wish Deanne immense success and the very best of luck in the future... |

Art - I know there's a lot going on, and that a lot of plans are in the works. That was my point. Recently, some political types have tried to imply otherwise. I agree that the NetNomads move brings together a great business with a great location. |

Cool. I can walk to the bank and then get a double espresso from Deanne. I can't think of a better way to start a Saturday morning...

"for an area without a plan..." Nohero, I'm not sure I agree with you, but I'm also not sure that I don't. Let me just put it this way; I still have other plans for the Avenue that I would like to see implemented. What would have made the article perfect for me would be where Lia said on page 32 of yesterday's Star Ledger, "the addition of a jitney stop" instead read, the Avenue has become more attractive to property owners because of a reduction in traffic, an increase in parking, the primary result of the addition of an "all-day" jitney stop that ferries people to the Maplewood and South Orange train stations. An all-day jitney makes it so much easier for people to get around and shop! |

the positive responses are heartwarming. Thank you so much for your support. And shh...it will be a privilege to serve up a double espresso for you on saturday mornings. i don't know if it's 'gutsy' but i sure am gaining a lot of positive things in the move. Among others: -bigger space -a landlord who is actually helping me with my business (he's being unbelievably helpful) -a basement for storage -room for outdoor tables and chairs -cell-phone service (i'm in a dead zone now) -central air (we'll be able to do music events in the summer next year!) -improved parking (i'm loving the idea of a municipal lot right across the street) There are things i'm going to miss terribly, like my neighbors and some of the people who live nearby that i'll probably not see as often. All in all, change is scary, but i think this is a good one. Thanks again... deanne |

good luck, deanne, but I have to say that I am a little bummed out as it was a good place for my young teen and pals to go within easy walking distance to home. But maybe it will be good for another set of young teens who do live in that area. What's going in your old space? |

Deannel, I cant tell you how happy we are that you are making the move over to SA. Many people have been so excited including myself about the SA turnaround and to watch it before our eyes is incredible. Put up a pot of coffee were all coming over.
