There is no single moment in the history of all American sports that was more stunning and important than the US Hockey team's defeat of the Soviet team in the 1980 Olympics. Herb Brooks was the man who made that happen. Just a few days before the Olympics started, I went to a warm-up game between the two teams in Madison Square Garden. The US team was destroyed. They were playing the most perfect hockey machine imaginable. The Soviets could skate, shoot, tend their goal and their passing was beyond description. I had never seen anything like it. The puck was scooting around like a pinball. They were so precise that it seemed like the Americans couldn't even touch the puck. It was like Babe Ruth hitting against 10 year olds. Yet a few weeks later, somehow Herb Brooks pulled off the all-time David vs. Goliath upset. Thank you Herb Brooks.

Coincidently, HBO aired the documentary about the 1980 US hockey team "Do You Believe in Miracles?" last night. |
