The following can be blamed entirely on a condition caused by reading the discussions on revaluation. It is not intended to represent the actual beliefs of anyone who would sign his real name to anything. It used to be that the big rivalry was between South Orange and Maplewood. Now, the big rivalry is the "East Side vs. West Side" rivalry which the tax revaluation has brought to the surface (at least for some people). Folks, we can do better than that. I'm sure that the intelligent creative people who live here (especially you folks who moved here recently) can come up with even finer divisions for our community. After all, doesn't everyone need someone to look down on, or resent, or feel contempt for? Some suggestions (feel free to comment or add to the following): Owners vs. Renters - an oldie but a goodie, but one which just hasn't received the attention it deserves in this debate. On the hill above Wyoming vs. on the hill below. Don't let those high and mighty folks between Ridgewood and Wyoming start to think that they are better than the real hill dwellers in this town. Neighborhoods bordering Newark vs. neighborhoods bordering Irvington - an obvious choice for finger pointing as to which area should have lost more value in the revaluation. Don't let those people get away with claiming that they live next to a worse town than you do! Former "Park Slopers" vs. Third Generation Maplewoodians - Clearly, one of these groups is responsible for the condition this town is in today. Harvard Ave. vs. Yale Ave. Obviously, one is a much more prestigious address than the other. Rutgers Ave. vs. Princeton Ave. - Obviously one is a much more prestigious - wait a minute, never mind. Park Ave. vs. Park Road - The folks from Certified must have been confused - why should they be different from anybody else? North Crescent vs. South Crescent - Stand back. This one could get ugly. (And yes, I know that there are better uses of my time.) J |

A sense of humor is a wonderous thing. You can lose your house, you can lose your mind, but should never lose your sense of humor. |

Let's not forget a few more subtle divisions in our community... 1. Families with kids in the schools and those without. 2. Mothers who "work" vs. those who stay home. (as if that isn't working!) 3. Fathers who "work" and those who stay home...ahh, never mind...how many of them could there be? 4. Those who think that CCR stands for a band that John Fogerty used to be in vs. those too young (sigh) to ever have heard of John Fogerty. 5. Those who love country music against everyone else. 6. Dog owners in the park vs. dog haters in the park (is anyone in the middle on this one?) 7. Those who drive 55 mph in the left lane of the Turnpike vs. the world! (is this just a Jersey phenomenon?) 8. Those who commute into the city vs. those who don't and, therefore, fail to understand the significance of scoring a seat on the mid-town direct. 9. PC vs. Mac..is that war still on? 10. Republicans vs. Democrats...oops, forgot...there are no Republicans in Maplewood. |

Musicme - wow, that's kinda cold. Just for that, no Tammy Wynette for you today! Gee, maybe that particular division is more pronounced than I originally thought. As for me, I'll stick with my old Blue Oyster Cult albums. Love that classic "Don't fear the assessor...." |

I thought the line was "don't fear the Reaper." I still love CCR (the band) tho the committee is no slouch either. Bacata |

You know, speaking of rivalries, the Battle of the Bands will feature bands from the "East" side and the "West" side, as well as "South" Orange ... Tickets still available. soul29@home.com |
