Does anyone know if the police is making any progress in this case? I have not heard anything about it in some time. |

I'm glad you brought this up. There seems to be a sort of conspiracy of silence with regard to our recent murder here in Maplewood. Not even the tiniest blurb in the Record since the first story. The lack of local news coverage always made me vaguely uncomfortable, but this takes the cake! I understand that the local police want to keep their investigation private -- but I think the citizens of this town are owed a least a little information. For instance, are there any suspects? The least they could do (especially if they have a suspect but are not ready for an arrest) is reassure Maplewood residents that we are safe, similar to what the DA did in the Ramsey case in Boulder. What about our local journalists? Why aren't they asking questions? Most people I talk to want to know what is happening. |

I think it has less to do with a conspiracy of silence and more to do with the less-than-stellar coverage of the News-Record. Not to completely blame the N-R; the newspaper seems to have an editorial staff of one, and my guess is she's spread pretty thin. Don't think I've seen anything on this in the Star Ledger either recently, so my guess is no news is just that--no news. |

This is driving me crazy - I live on the block where it happened and jump every time someone rings my doorbell. I have heard nothing but rumors and the police seem to have made no progress. What bothers me is the longer this goes on the less likely they are to catch someone. In my few discussions with the police they were adamant about saying they had to keep details secret for the sake of the case. Fine I don't need to know the DNA details but I would like to know as a neighbor and taxpayer what they are doing, what are the reasonable expectations for solving this. I don't think that is too much to ask. I keep hearing rumors that they are sure it was not a random attack but I want to hear that from them before I feel better |

I too live within blocks of where Christine was murdered. Myself and others have been extremely frustrated both with the lack of communication between the police and residents and the way the investigation seems to have been conducted. For example, many neighborhood residents and friends were not spoken to for at least a week. As a former prosecutor I know that it is basic investigative technique to speak to neighbors and friends as soon as possible. Many of us were spoken to for the first time about a week after Christine died at a neighborhood function. I have been assured by the former Mayor and prosecutors I know within the Essex county prosecutors office that this was not a random act of violence. THis seems inconsistent on some level with the police suggesting that they have increased their presence in the area (which we have not seen) I think that the police and Mayor need to strike a balance between maintaining the confidentiality of an investigation and giving much needed comfort to residents. Myself and others have spoken to the Mayor and police chief. I urge others to do the same and keep up the pressure to have this horrible crime solved |

Perhaps providing comfort to the residents will be the responsibility of the New Police Director, once they are appointed by our TC. The TC certainly has difficulty communicating with the residents, much less the the police force. |
