http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/18/science/space/18CND-MARS.html?hp Wondering where the best place to view the red planet might be in the next 2 weeks. And how does one get into the observation tower at CHS? Cathy |

Cathy: There was a blurb in the Ledger on Sunday announcing a "star party" in Riker Art Park in Livingston on Friday (8/22) from 9pm-midnight, hosted by the Newark Museum (its planetarium astronomer, Kevin Conod, writes the weekly Ledger article in the "Accent" section). This week's write-up, incidentally, focused on Mars. This would be a nice chance to see the planet through decent telescopes (people bring all sorts and sizes with them for personal viewing as well as for sharing with others). Btw, these events are usually co-hosted by a local astronomy group or university club. Enthusiastic and friendly bunch, for sure. There are also star clusters and galaxies to be seen in summer skies, so it would be well worth attending. I know you've often expressed interest in this sort of thing. Don't forget to bring binoculars if you own them (those underappreciated twin mini-telescopes we all have); even the most experienced astronomer enjoys this quick and easy way to merely stargaze with a pair, capturing the beauty of whole constellations and wider fields of sky. If I can make it, I'll let you know. If you need directions, just holler. |

Sorry, it's just what I think of when someone says, "Mars approaches!" Thanks for the heads-up. |

As I consider above post, it appears that heads have very little to do with it. (Note to those who have posted on other threads about those South Orange Grille bartenders: it's spelled "bosoms.") Thank you and good night. |

Good morning Patty, and you’re welcome… As I consider the above post, it appears you’re right! Hey, the truth is, busoms, or bosoms, we all got the points! And, either way, if you got ‘em, why not flaunt ‘em... |

Patty, thanks so much for the info. Might have to give the kid some caffeine so she can enjoy it, too! (She'd love the excuse for having coffee ice cream or ice tea!) So where exactly is Riker Art Park? (I think the Orson Welles thing was amazing! Not sure how I'd have felt if I'd been around for it but you gotta hand it to the guy - he knew how to put on a show!) It's in Livingston. Saw my first lunar eclipse there with the CHS Astronomy Club. |

...Right, Dave....but can you give a teensy clue as to what part of Livingston it's in? I would hazard a guess that it's away from the center so as to have less light pollution. Thanks. Cathy |

Hope I do this right......Riker Art Park is an old Nike missile tracking site (!) just northwest of the Livingston Mall. There are signs for the Park off of Eisenhower Parkway (after you make that right onto it from S.O. Ave., just beyond the Mall) that direct you to make a right (or bear right) off the Parkway. Follow signs along the road (wish I knew the exact name) winding up to fairly high ground. You will pass a series of ground levels that have low, small cement buildings (now art studios) and space for cars but at the top it is obvious from the parked cars and the small field with blankets, lawn chairs and telescopes that you have arrived. |

Thanks, Patty. Think I'll try to scope it out in daylight first! So it's between the mall and the Livingston Circle it sounds like. Cathy |
