You missed one very important question... Did you have sex during the great Black Out? |

Actually nine months after the 1977 blackout there was a spike in the birth rate. Maybe TV is a better contraceptive than pills? |

Ugh. It was way too hot for that. And we're too old to do it in the shower. |

Who am I kidding? I was with my parents, my three kids, my brother & his girlfriend and a stinky dog in the dark, had to sleep on an uncomfortable sofabed (no power to blow up the Aerobed!) while my husband was in Maplewood in our bed, with A/C, all alone, enjoying solitude. I wasn't even thinking about sex! |

The following are the verbatim responses thus far broken out by WHERE I WAS WHEN THE BLACKOUT HAPPENED in response to the Question: "What did you find most ANNOYING about the blackout?" (Note: responses cut off at 100 char. limit.)
quote: At work in NY Morons in the city who couldn't shut up about "oh my god, is it terrorism?!?" SHUT UP missed my publishing deadline Lack of cellphone service; no transportation information lack of available information and no cell service I was not carrying CASH! Everyone looked like they were having fun in the pubs Not knowing what happened until much later. Also, there were fires at 14th Street and on Staten Isl Not knowing how to get out of Manhattan! no plan to get people out of the city!! Could not get home from work. I was stuck in Manhattan, and my answer to this question would take a lot more than 100 characters. getting home. Getting home from NYC It took over 5 hours to get home (via car) from Manhattan! I could have driven to Maine in less tim no cell phone service nj transit train sat for more than one hour before switching to diesel and prceeding to newark Unable to get home Unable to guess when I MIGHT get home No water service in 'evacuation location' Walking down 47 flights of stairs in an office building in NYC. phones were out or difficult Trying to get home. That the rest of town seemed to HAVE power. At work in Hudson County I loved the blackout People have no patience nothing. At work in Essex County Trying to get out of work in Newark. Luckily, we did not lose power at home. couldn't use either regular or cell phone to check on my significant other & child Worrying that it was terrorism Traffic lights that didn't work. That the emergency backup stairwell lights were off and I had to walk down 5 flights of stairs in da At work in Bergen County came at the end of the work day, not the beginning, which would have allowed me to play golf (no ele Traffic At work elsewhere Not knowing where my daughter was. having to reboot several servers after the initial extended brownout Not being able to contact my husband. At home, not working The increasing heat that accompanies a summer blackout. For starters, I have a giant schnauzer who loss of computer/internet because of the frequent power hits and quick losses of power, there was potential damage to home ele had to reboot my computer 5 or 6 times realizing that every battery-powered radio we had required 8 "D" batteries with different insertion the "news" coverage Blown circuit breaker Lack of airconditioning No AC That it happened in the first place. This as I a Lost material on my computer I'd been writing. Husband couldn't take train home in time for dinner. immediate shouts of terrorism No one told me ahead of time! worrying about offspring stuck in NYC without cash The lack of simple planning for emergencies, e.g. why don't high rise buildings have back-up generat Computer rebooting No air circulation - even a fan would've been fine. The following are the verbatim responses thus far broken out by WHERE I WAS WHEN THE BLACKOUT HAPPENED in response to the Question: "What did you most ENJOY (if anything) about the blackout?" (Note: responses cut off at 100 char. limit.)
quote: At work in NY Nothing, sorry relaxed atmosphere on streets of NY. Chance to shine at work. ha! people watching. Many tanktops in MYC last thursday Not a thing. Small kindnesses along the way -- water for the pregnant woman i was walking for -- the bus to Newar no work on Friday I never saw so many stars above the city. And people were surprisingly kind. meeting people, having a good time while trying to get home. watching the people in Manhattan who were enjoying themselves and helping each other out the kindness of strangers nothing, idiot. 'Snow day' freedom/reprieve Party atmosphere in NYC Friday off! Nothing. getting loaded Nothing. Not having to go to work on Friday. At work in Hudson County nothing quiet At work in Essex County We couldn't work, so we all cleared out, and I was able to drive home without any major problem. a little time stolen away from work (since we had to leave the building) getting out of work early The quiet. Ordinary people trying to help out, like a guy at an intersection directing traffic. At work in Bergen County with the new york city light pollution diminished, i could see mars all the better. At work elsewhere the endless, useless fingerpointing of blame Nothing. At home, not working Whenever blackouts happen, especially at night, we light candles and gather around. We discuss well less noise general excitement once it was confirmed it was just a blackout. not being profoundly affected the quiet and seeing the stars in the night sky more clearly w/o NYC light pollution that I was at the Maplewood pool and not in the city temporary suspension of parkway tolls Caused us to have a wonderful family game night by oil lamp. Brought us closer That it only lasted about 8 hours Community spirit abounded. At home, working from home Nothing not losing power :-) I saved money on my electric bill. the ability to see the stars in the night sky The quiet, laying in the hammock reading by flashlight, seeing the sky. Learning that Springfield was unaffected and going to a restaraunt there for dinner.
I was only called an idiot once. Not bad. |
