Hi! I am moving into Maplewood. Our home has a water softener that costs approximately $55/qtr to rent. How do you feel about the water quality in Maplewood? Should we invest in the water softener? Or, is our money better spent elsewhere? Thanks for the help!

In my opinion, you do not need a water softner here in Maplewood. But, that is an opinion.

I’ve installed several for folks who wanted them and they are happy with them.

Rather than pay a monthly fee, consider buying one. Here is what I recommend.

Go to Sears. Buy a water testing kit, take the water samples as directed and mail them in. When you get the results, consider your need based on the facts from your test and your personal experience with the water.

If you feel that you want one, buy a Sears unit and install it. You can get them on sale often, and with installation you will be running for around $800.

Good luck,
George

Call New Jersey American Water Company in Short Hills and they will tell you what the hardness of your water is for nothing. They take certified samples on a regular basis. For the most part, Maplewood water is about average for hardness and you don't really need a softener. The water is a combination of surface(Passaic River) and well water(various locations). Well water tends to be "harder" than surface water. I would recommend spending your money on a carbon filter to take out chlorine, chlorine byproducts(trihalomethanes) and improve taste at or under your kitchen sink on the cold water line.

Does any body know about the water quality in South Orange? Just moved here ( I love it!) My neighbor has a water softener and likes it.
