Must say that the paving job done last week on Franklin Ave is pathetic. There are about 4 seams, 8 to 12 inches wide, running paralel to the street. Clearly a poor job. Where did the town get this company from? How was the paving on other streets? Anyone? Bueler? |

I am very po'd about the streets. Ours was paved and there wasn't one pothole or crack, anywhere! And if there were, how about just patching the holes? First, the new black top is UGLY! Second, it's smoother, so cars go FASTER! We've given the Dept of Public Works a ridiculous budget if they seem to think that paving a perfectly good street is sound paving policy. The TC clearly has too much money, or it is being allocated in a foolish manner. I looked at my copy of The Leaflet (aren't most "leaflets" worthy of being tossed out btw?) and it said $5 per linear foot. Well, I suppose that's about $7000 bucks for our street right there. Besides Ridgewood Road, which had a total re-do, they paved about 30 other blocks. For sake of arguement, they're all $7000 x 30 = $210,000. 210M could go a long way toward town trees or police dept or schools or Spgfld ave. Anything!! Paving roads that do not need to be paved is ludicrous and a waste of my $21000+ taxes. |

Umm, I know this is thread drift but I just wanted to stick up for the Leaflet - I find it to be very helpful and informative, a great improvement over the piecemeal way information was disseminated -- or, more often than not, not disseminated -- in the past. That is all. You may continue. |

Ffof, your complaint proves that the town can't satisfy people no matter how hard it tries. How many people complained about the slurry that was used on some streets, even though it saved a great deal of money? How many people have complained about their streets not getting paved at all? And what color do you want BLACKtop to be? The streets are paved on a schedule. Would you rather a couple of bomb craters develop before the repairs began, or would you rather the town be pre-emptive? |

I would rather have the town do it right. It was a lousy job, especially considering the cost. |

How's about throwing some of that asphalt down on Maplewood Avenue between Jefferson and Baker!! The road surface is an embarrassment. |

I favor dirt roads in light of epidemic disregard for speed limits. |

How about the town taking care of the sidewalks instead? I know they are the homeowners' responsibilty, but with all the trees the town owns, half the sidewalks in Maplewood are being pushed up by the roots. It is amazing that anywhere else the person owning the tree is responsible for any damage caused by the tree, but Maplewood has managed to pass a little loophole to that law. |

DrF- The old "blacktop" was a nice pebbly gray. I guess that was the result of the old "slurry" you mentioned - the dusty stones on top of some sort of tar. I never complained about that knowing that the dust that was created was temporary. It all ground in nicely. And pre-emptive paving is bs (pardonnez-moi ma francais). It is bad spending policy. Our street was fine inspite of a bad winter. If there is one pothole, then fix that pothole. On the other hand, a few potholes keep speeders in check. And on the third hand , the potholes on Wyoming Ave were horrendous and that did need need a re-do...thankyou Essex County. |
