even though I'm a non-smoker, I also agree with luv2cruise. and as long as the ventilation system is new, the smoke shouldn't be too intense. And let's face it, if the place was smoke-free, how annoying would it be for EVERYONE in town, if there were always groups of smokers standing outside the pub puffing away. |

good points ml1. As far as NYC goes, one way to deal with the smoking issue could be to put a limited number of indoor smoking licences up for auction and allow bars/restaurants to buy them if they think that will help their business. This will allow people who don't want to be in a smokey environment to have places to go and will raise money for the city. then again everyone could also just put in some dip or chew if they needed their nicotine fix so badly. Other suggestions for St. James's Gate: Jukebox w/ every Springsteen album Yuengling Porter (either on tap or in bottles is fine) |

another point -- a good bar with a bad bartender is a bad bar. The South Orange Grille opened with a few know-nothings behind the bar, based, it seems, on their generously-endowed busoms. I witnessed a customer ask for a "7 and 7", which she dutifully poured, then lifted the Seagrams bottle, read the word "whiskey", and then type that into her touch-screen monitor. The same night I saw another patron order a Jaegermeister and then encourage another bartender to "taste it". PLEEZ, if you're getting an experienced chef, how about an experienced barkeep! |

John M. - Ice cold cider. Preferably Wood Pecker, the British Budweiser of ciders. Yum. I told Jane you said hi. You'll be seeing her! |

The South Orange Grille is a joke. They have inexperienced bartenders, you can't wear your hat backwards, and they have last call at 1:15. |

Newjerz, That place is awful. They wanted us to wait on line!!! When we got in, no one served us. There were a few scared rabbits running around behind the bar who ignored anyone over 21. Very stupid, negative place. |

Knows his/her drinks, courteous and friendly, (on a busy night) able to serve drinks quickly, (on a slow night) able to have an interesting conversation with the patrons, no attitude, and always a generous pourer. |

A bartender who has your drink ready before you even make it to your barstool. |

The over 21 part is the key. I haven't set foot in there yet, since the whole project has been somewhat smelly to me since it took 2 years to renovate, but I hear the underage drinking is the norm. I heard on the police scanner that two teens who were drinking at South Orange Grille and later pulled over were let off the hook after a call to headquarters. What's the deal? And how close are our elected officials to this place? I hear it's the one place where you're guaranteed to find a few trustees/administrators. And they'll be out in force for the ribbon cutting? |

Ignatious, Well, too bad their "busoms" don't know how to fix and serve a drink. |

Bets: You have to be kidding me. All the elected officials have done is criticize this place for taking so long to get going and now you are trying to imply corruption. Before you start rumors, maybe you should call the police director and find out why they were "let off the hook". Almost every new business has a ribbon cutting ceremony when it opens. I have been criticized by many for almost never attending them. I think I have been to three of them in over four years. It is expected (part of the job) for the administrator and the village president to try and go to every new business when it opens. Feel free to take my place at the ceremony, because this is another one I won't be able to attend. I have run into other trustees at Cryan's, Gaslight, The Dancing Goat, Blue Moon, Georgio's, Reservoir, Starbucks, Cait & Abby's and I am sure others. Does that mean something is fishy? or maybe we all live and shop/eat in S. Orange. |
