If you need stripping, refinishing, and/or repairing, I recommend The Wood Strip at 4 Ashland Avenue in West Orange (near Edison Museum). Excellent work, reasonable. If they had a frequent shopper program, I could probably redeem my points for a full dining room set rehab.

Directly across the street from them there is a building which houses Fabulous Wallcoverings. (The entrance for Fabulous is on Main Street, however). They have hundreds of books with fabric swatches for your selection. Fabulous does some fabric work - not sure whether they do upholstery, but the selection is enormous and the prices are good.

Other area upholsters include Star Upholstery on Valley in Orange (near the S.O border) and Ultimate on Valley in Maplewood (kinda across from Pathmark. Terminal Mill Ends (Union) also sells fabric and does upholstery. They have a service where a designer brings fabric samples to your home. In my experience, Star is much quicker than the other two but I get the feeling that he might tack on a couple of extra bucks to the price if you're driving a nice car or wearing expensive jewelry.... Ultimate is by far the slowest, but they did an excellent job for me on some tricky chairs with an exacting fabric pattern. I'm sure someone will chime in on Terminal Mill Ends. They do nice work and have nice fabric selections but I found the process of selecting a fabric, arranging a pick up, waiting for the job to be done, arranging the delivery to be tedious and time-consuming.

That said, I've used them all several times and would again, depending on the project.

I tried Terminal Mill Ends to have a widow seat cushion made last year. Went in late October picked the fabric and gave them until Christmas to have it made. A month later they called to tell me the fabric was discontinued...ordered new and after I didn't hear back from them until Christmas, I called and they said they had no record of my re-order. That was my experience. Would not reccommend TME to anyone.
