I heard it was going to be out for nine months. Let's see, it was closed off in late May, so that would bring us to another SIX MONTHS of pain-in-the-butt detours. Argggh! |

I heard four or five months. Insane as it sounds, I have gotten use to the inconvenience and no longer think about it.

i talked to the guy who runs the liquor store in millburn mall and he said they hadn't touched it since around july 4th. apparently they took down the old bridge and then found out that some of their engineering assumptions about the earth under the bridge were wrong, so a new study had to be done. i guess that's better than building a new bridge and having it fall down, but i don't get the impression that their techniques are the model of efficiency. the other thing i heard was that five different governments were involved due to the location of the bridge (millburn twp, union twp, essex county, union county, and the state). based on that alone, our expectations should have been low from the beginning. |

Nothing like having traffic on Valley Street backed up from Oakland Road to Millburn Ave. daily - good thing it's not an all-day-long situation. |

The lady in the bakery told me they said it would take another year because of some other problems discovered when they took the bridge up. |

I hear that businesses in Millburn Mall are down 50% from the same time last year, and that there are no plans for the County or other governments to help mitigate the losses. Access has been maintained to the shopping center, albeit in a very damaged fashion, so the leases remain in effect and there is no recourse to business interruption insurance (if they even have it). A very bad situation all around, which has been exacerbated by the engineering problem. People who used to shop in these stores on an impulse basis when driving by on Vauxhall Road need to remember them now, or else there won't be a bakery, pizza restaurant, deli, etc. when Vauxhall Road reopens. |

I know this is a bit of a drift, but we all know that if you or I missed some crucial target at our jobs, we would be out of there. This is just a general gripe about public works/government projects in general. They're hardly ever done in a reasonable amount of time. I'd love to know more about their "assumptions about the earth". Is Maplewood some kind of geological oddity or something? Sorry for the rant. Continue talking about bridge... |

I agree with Gozer. It's just ridiculous that they get away with leaving the project just sitting there for months while local businesses suffer and local residents have to put up with heavy traffic. Yes, I have gotten used to the detour (I live off Ridgewood Rd, so I would otherwise always take Vauxhall over to get over to Home Depot or get on 78, etc), but why should I have to? It's been several months now. You'd think that's enough time to repair or replace the bridge and MOVE ON. If this really takes a year, that's insane. Too bad we can't recall local officials the way Californians plan to recall their governor. |

What local officials would you recall? Millburn's and Union's? The project isn't even in Maplewood. |

Vauxhall Road construction delays irk merchants Friday, August 29, 2003 BY JASON JETT Star-Ledger Staff ... "There's an engineering problem," said Union County Assistant Engineer Tim Mettlen. "We're doing a slight redesign that will delay the project a month and a half. Then we'll be ready to go forward." Mettlen said there are no workers or equipment at the site because further work cannot be done until the riverbed is restabilized, or redefined, to serve as a foundation for a bridge. ... I don't care much about the effect on traffic, but I really sympathize with the merchants. Do they have any legal recourse against the governments involved? Tom Reingold

See my post above--it is likely that as far as they are concerned, access remains available to the Mall. |

Remember what happened when Maplewood redid one of our bridges a few years ago? Engineering problems were identified which significantly delayed the reopening of the bridge. Millburn and Union are not alone in having this type of problem. Lets hope the businesses at the Millburn Mall can survive the delay. |
