I love them and as we have lots of shade (mostly occupied by straggly half-dead pachysandra or bug-eaten hostas) I was thinking of putting some in. Any tips from fern-gardeners? What types do best in Maplewood soil/conditions? Are they (hopefully) effort-free?

Note: You've heard of weekend gardeners--I'm kind of a "seasonal" gardener, in that I spend 1-2 days a season working on it. Pathetic, I know, but with three kids and a full-time job I am lucky I have time to take a shower. So, any suggestions for plants that thrive on total neglect would be most helpful.

Depends on the soil conditions. Cinnamon ferns and interrupted ferns prefer moist soil. New York ferns or hay-scented ferns do well in drier soil. Sensitive ferns do well in moist soil but may tolerate drier soil.

I have proceeded by trial and error. Darwin determines the plants that proper in our garden.

Feel free to schedule a garden tour.
