I love them and as we have lots of shade (mostly occupied by straggly half-dead pachysandra or bug-eaten hostas) I was thinking of putting some in. Any tips from fern-gardeners? What types do best in Maplewood soil/conditions? Are they (hopefully) effort-free? Note: You've heard of weekend gardeners--I'm kind of a "seasonal" gardener, in that I spend 1-2 days a season working on it. Pathetic, I know, but with three kids and a full-time job I am lucky I have time to take a shower. So, any suggestions for plants that thrive on total neglect would be most helpful. |

Depends on the soil conditions. Cinnamon ferns and interrupted ferns prefer moist soil. New York ferns or hay-scented ferns do well in drier soil. Sensitive ferns do well in moist soil but may tolerate drier soil. I have proceeded by trial and error. Darwin determines the plants that proper in our garden. Feel free to schedule a garden tour. |

Check out http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/shade/. Also, a quick Internet search for "shade gardens" or something similar will turn up loads more information.
