Does anyone know of an organization/shelter that could use womens' suits/dresses, etc. They are in great condition - just old and don't fit me anymore. Thanks. |

Can't think of a name, but I've heard of organization that collect suits and "power outfits" for women (on welfare, in a shelter?) who are job hunting and need appropriate attire. Maybe someone else knows which group I am thinking of, and perhaps there is one in the Newark area? |

Spw784, I think the organization you are referring to is Dress For Success. It is based in Manhattan - sorry, I don't know the number. St Stephen's Episcopal Church on S Orange Ave also accepts clothes in the mornings only. There was a previous thread with information about donating clothes that has the details. |

Dress for Success is an excellent organization. My wife is on their board. |

THE VIETNAM VETS WILL PICK UP HOUSEHOLD ITEMS, ESPECIALLY CLOTHING, RIGHT FROM YOUR FRONT PORCH. IT GOES TO A GOOD CAUSE. THEY'RE THE ONES WHO SEND OUT THOSE BLUE AND WHITE POSTCARDS. JUST CALL TO ARRANGE A DATE. |

The Vietnam Vets may be a good cause, and it is convenient to have them pick up, but I think that the clothing that they collect is sold for rags, as opposed to reused as clothing. So you might not want to do this with good, usable clothing. |

Actually, I once had to go up to the VVets store and they seemed to be selling it as clothes. |

St Stephen's at Ridgewood Rd and South Orange Ave. takes donations of good clothing for direct use at women's shelters in our immediate area. Hours are 9-12 M-F. very good cause and local. |

Optymist, That church is actually called St. Andrew's and Holy Communion. I have taken clothes there--they go to battered women's shelters. A good cause. Lseltzer, I am glad to hear about the Vietnam Vets. I had read that they sell the clothes they collect by contract. If not, all the better. |

Lseltzer, where is the store? Perhaps I can refer some clients there or even take a look for myself. I noticed the Goodwill store on Stuyvesant in Union closed recently. Too bad, they seemed to be doing a brisk business there. Maybe their property taxes were too high? Bacata |

Nakaille: It's up in Nutley I think, in a bad area and with inadequate parking. |

Kathy, you are so right! I was following an earlier post and didn't pay attention to the name. I, too feel better knowing the clothes go to people of need in our area rather than becoming rags. Thanks for catching that ! |
