My first night at the new Pub and Ed's second. One hour wait for a table - no problem - hung by the bar - Thanks Dave for buying me a drink. Enjoyed my chicken caesar salad. Ed had the Gaelic steak made with Irish whiskey and topped with Irish steak sauce. Thanks Ken for recommending lady that marblizes tables. What impressesd me was that the crowd ranged in age from wee infants to very senior citizens, just like we witnessed in Ireland. Now that Ed realizes that St. James Gate refers to the Dublin address of the Guinness Brewery he is sorry that we never took the Guinness plant tour when we had the chance. Thank God that the new pub has brought a small bit of the old sod into my back yod.

After the party, we went to the party....

Three times is a charm! It keeps getting better. It's like Times Square, if you wait long enough, you'll meet everyone you ever knew...

About the 'pints'...I too felt they were at most 14 oz., and probably 12 oz. But, they never list them as pints. Just drafts. So I guess we don't have much of a complaint, do we? Well, except that $4.25 is a bit steep for a 12 oz draft...

That being said, I love the pub and think it is a great addition to the town.

ditto the great reviews--and let me add that, as these things go, the prices were very reasonable; my wife & I did dinner for two (including appetizers) w/ 3 drafts, for under $50--unheard of at most spots we visit in the area.

Love the pub?? Bit much for me. I went on a Saturday night, 8:30 PM. A line outside for tables, stood a bit at the bar to get a seat. Had a short brew or two at that price.

Noted that of all the people in the pub, and all the folks in this town that I know, I did not see anyone that I knew.

Bummer. Toss the food, let the out of towners find a new place to try and let us have a town pub, alone!

We went to the pub for the first time tonight and saw several people that we knew. The owners seems like great people. We all had a good time there.

Jgberkeley,

"let the out of towners find a new place..."

I believe they have, and I know what you mean about a lot of new faces. It's kinda like the good news, bad news story again. Sometimes we get what we ask for!

However, on this one lets give credit where credit is due.

I really believe this is the kind of positive progress that comes to Maplewood when the township committee, the Planning Board, and the Board of Adjustment looks at the big picture. We all know they can't keep everybody happy, so why not at least try to keep the majority smiling.

Don’t you just love all those happy faces?

George, my hat goes off to them on this one, and it only goes to support the fact that you can never have an over abundance of good restaurants and watering holes in town. The operative word here of course is "GOOD"!

Thanks guys, the truth is Maplewood hasn’t seen this much excitement in town since the TC announced they were going to build a community swimming pool...

C'mon now. I can't believe people are whining about $4.25 drafts being too expensive and the fact that there is nobody that they know at the bar. Oh, well, I suppose that musty old 60s era mens clothing store that used to be there was better... The fact of the matter is that downtown is much improved by the presence of St. James' Gate. The puling I see on this messageboard is unbelievable sometimes.

I haven't been there yet, but I hope to give it a try soon.

btw, the quotient of good reviews to gripes is really quite good for MOL. This is usually a place where half the people would complain about free ice cream on a 100 degree day. (I can imagine the bitching after such a giveaway -- "they only had 5 flavors," "nothing non-fat," "no waffle cones," "what about ices for the lactose-intolerant," "but I'm on a diet," blah, blah, blah," ad nauseum).

The pub is great - hats off to the Meades for having the energy, vision and courage to make a big investment, adding a wonderful amount of value to our downtown. I plan to go regularly and enjoy yet another great thing in downtown Maplewood. The fish and chips are fantastic and the drafts are poured perfectly!

You're absolutely right, ML1! Whenever I start feeling bad about that fact and wondering why I live in a town so full of sniveling whiners, I look at the names of the people posting on the board and realize its actually always the same 10 or 12 people who do all the griping and spewing of highly polarized political dogma. Of course, it's like watching the Anna Nicole Show or biting the inside of your mouth -- I do hate it, but can't stop.

I haven't been inside St. James as of yet, but from what I've seen on the outside, it is certainly the best addition Maplewood Village has received in years. If the food remains excellent, the quality and selection of beer is substantial, and is always open to expansion, and most of all the service rendered is of phonemal caliber, there is no question that St. James will be part of Maplewood for many years (possibly decades) to come. BTW to anybody that has been there, how many selections on tap, or bottles at this point, roughly?

Geez..from the look of the crowds inside and outside the pub, you would think they just ended prohibition in Maplewood. I saw folks sitting on the sidewalk waiting to get in.

I may have to wait until the novelty wears off before I can get in

The fries are wonderful - real spuds, sweet and the closest to homemade that I've had outside of home. And the mussel appetizer was a revelation...the sauce seemed to have a reduced broth, wine, cream and that touch of cayenne pepper, with ham/rasher bits on the bottom. When the diminutive bread piece was gone, we found that a mussel shell made a handy spoon. Yummmm. A terrible beauty is born .

I was there last night for the first time, and what a great place! The staff was excellent, and the fellow patrons were a blast. What a great mix of ages. We even saw kids in there, which is a very authentic Irish pub thing (in Ireland, the whole family goes to pubs, babies on up). As it got later, the place got packed. We had a great time.
Re the question about drafts: I don't drink beer, but my friend I was there with does, and she was impressed with the long list of available drafts. She ended up trying some unfamiliar brew called Hoffenbrau (does that sound right, beer drinkers?) and really liked it. They also have Boddingtons (again, is that right?) which she said is hard to find on draft (she said her husband was going to end up cemented to a barstool once he finds out about that). I loved the place. This is one of the best things to happen to Maplewood in a long time!

Guess what?
The merlot was good too! They also have cider (Magnum's) which I will be drinking tonight. OK - back to the bar!
There's nothing like spending your whole life in a BAR!

We could use 10 more establishments like this in the area; family friendly, good food, reasonable prices, excellent tap selection and great location.

But alas, I'm sure we'll get 10 more nail salons first.

I raise my glass to ye, slange!

We tried it for the first time last night, too. What a treat! The wait staff is incredible....and on our way out, the hostess said goodnight to us by name. I can't remember names 5 seconds after said to me, so I was duly impressed. A very friendly, comfortable atmosphere, great burgers, and of course, great beer. Can't wait to go back.
