What are you looking for and why? Can you or do you detect mold by sight or smell? Mold (Fungi) is as the professionals say - ubiquitous in the environment. If it exists outside - it will exist inside. The issue is, is it amplified inside your house? What are the sources of amplification and how do we control it. In general, visible levels of mold are not acceptable. Fungi, need a few things to survive: a source of water, heat and food. Generally speaking, the last two are in all of our houses but water is the real kicker in terms of controlling mold. The main sources of water are threefold - high humidity (>40% RH); water intrusion (leaking roof/basement; and leakage from sources inside the house such as piping/ toilets/ tubs, etc... ). Look at these sources first and eliminate them now. If you do not, then whatever cleanup you pay for now will have to be re-done when your mold problem returns. I have attached info from the EPA on mold in the home. http://www.epa.gov/iaq/molds/moldresources.html If you are interested in sampling yourself, try Chin Yang @ P&K Microbiology, 856-489-4455. They are an AIHA accredited environmental Microbiology lab, located in Cherry Hill, NJ. Sampling for id consists mostly of sterile wipes on visible mold. P&K could also suggest a few mold remediation firms in NJ. If you need more help, private line me. This is one the areas I dabbled in during my consulting days. |

Oops - almost forgot. The NYCDOH put together a good guideline for assessment and control of microbial contaminants.http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doh/html/epi/moldrpt1.html By the way, sampling is not limited to just swab or wipe samples but for most homes, they do not need to go to the expense of air sampling or real time PCR. If you have a problem, spend your money on the control and cleanup. An extensive mold problem like from Stachybotrys should be treated like remediating asbestos, in terms of containment, ventilation and PPE. Last item, if you have a mold infestation as a result of an water damage event, it may be covered by your home insurance. |

Indoor Environmental Services, L.L.C Speak with Jim Mallock. 732.288.2981 office or 908.910.4742 cell. I highly recommend him. He will test your property, take samples, send them to the lab, give you the results, draw up an estimate for remediation (if necessary), discuss with you every step of the remediation process, suggest ways in which you can keep the mold from coming back, make sure your home is free of mold when he leaves. Dependable, thorough, knowledgeable, patient.
