So we're did A LOT of cleaning upon moving in and
managed to fill up 3/4 of our 2 car garage with debris.
We paid a guy $350 to remove it.

Did we over pay?

I had 3 truck fulls (about 1/4 of my two-car
garage each of the three times) removed and it was in that range. Unless we both got snookered, I think you're in the ball park.

I do know someone locally who is extremely reasonable, for future reference. I am not sure if I should post his number here without his approval, but if you private line me I will give it to you. From the work that he has done for me, I think he would have charged you less. But then again, I don't really know how much you had to haul off. In fact, he just did me a solid today by helping me haul an old farm sink (5 foot cast iron! for free) that I am hoping to put in my new kitchen.

Happy Dumping

Costs also depend a bit on what it is--you're paying for the labor/hauling, but also dump fees which are based on weight and/or volume (not sure how it works) and which have been rising.

We brought some stuff to the dump in Elizabeth. We got authorization and information from the township. We have two hatchback cars, so we were able to bring a lot of stuff. The place is set up for trucks, so our stuff looked like fly droppings by comparison. Most of the staff there were helpful, but one guy in particular was utterly abusive to my wife. He made some hint about being allowed there only once, but I can't be sure that guy knew what he was saying.

Since they charge by the ton, and we only had maybe 200 pounds, the fee was tiny. Trucks have to pay a minimum charge, but private residents don't, by arrangement between the township and Waste Management company.
