I would love to see them if you do and I promise to behave...;-D

We are doing an addition and find granite lovely but kind of cold--would love to hear your opinions.

Many thanks and be well, all.

David,

We are waiting for the contractor to install our small slate counter in our bathroom. I had it made in upstate NY (west of Lake George) and went to the quarry to pick it up. After a tour of the place, he took me to the showroom. I wish my wife was there to see the red slate. When it is 'honed' it looks like a rich wood. The slate sinks are great too.

Have a look at their site http://www.sheldonslate.com/ The pictures don't do it justice. Don't be intimidated by their distant location. They will arrange to measure on site, and their prices are far less than any local person (if you can find one who does slate). They will also send samples, if you ask.

Steven:

Would you be willing to discuss your counter with me?

I sent you a private line but you may not have received it--I spoke to Sheldon people but they weren't aware of any orders in the S.O/Maplewood area of NJ.

If you would discuss w/ me, call my office at 212 221 1771, post here or send me a message by clicking on my name to the left.

Many thanks and be well,

David Buckley

DB, our mutual friends across town have a slate countertop in their den. Give them a call and go see it. It's beautiful. Or maybe you saw it already....?
Take care, my friend.

David,

I just received a sample of soap stone in the mail (We install it).
FYI: Personaly think granite is a waste of money.
Although pretty, it's a 90's fad coming to an end.
In 5 years there's going to be even more homes with granite in them. Hence old hat. Soap stone and slate are on the way in and will add more value to your home. I like it better any way.
Older homes usally had a soap stone sink in the basement and now made it to the kitchen.

If I can add any more value please feel free to call. (973)761-7000}

We are considering soapstone countertops in our kitchen renovation. Does anyone have experience buying and installing soapstone from M. Teixera Soapstone in Garfield? Their quote was significantly less than other ones I've gotten, but I know nothing about them other than that they import the stone directly from Brazil. Any advice by email would be appreciated.

I just finished (10/5) installing the soapstone countertops & Sink in my House (Maplewood, Golf Island) by M. Teixera, and they look great. They were the only ones I tried, because they were the closest, so did not compare to others. Just compared it to granite, and basically same cost. Had a couple issues with fit, (error in the template), took two tries to fix it, but they had no issue coming out and fixing it immeadiatly. Just make sure you over see the template making. M.Teixera, brings stone in from Brazil & India, we went with the India stone, because we like the grains better. If you or D. Buckley want to see, no problems, drop a line.

I agree with Micheal McKell - our architect said to stay away from granite - too clunky for these old houses. Savvy homebuyers are lookiing at the granite/subzero look in an old house as a liability, they're dated and a bit vulger IMHO.

Soapstone, wood or slate countertops compliment an older house and don't "shout" when you enter the kitchen.
