[I posed this in the "Please help" forum, and then realized it might be better here. Sorry for the duplication.]

I'd like to try plan ahead for our family vacation (for once!), and an interest in Cape Cod has been expressed for 2004. I haven't been there since 1968, so anything I have to say on the subject is badly outdated.

I would love to hear suggestions for good towns to stay, any tips on finding a reasonably-priced cottage rental for a family of six, and so on. If you actually happen to own a place and would like to bypass the rental agent, please let me know!

And, yes, I will be htting the Websites, and checking guidebooks. But I'd like to hear from you, too, if you have anything to offer.

It depends on what you want. We go to Wellfleet, near the end of the Cape, which has great beaches (ocean, bay, pond), access to the Cape Cod Rail trail, convenient access to Orleans and Provincetown, decent food (for the Cape). It is also by the National Seashore. It is a good place for kids. Depending on the kids ages, you can enroll them in the Mass Audabon nature camp, which has weekly sessions (at very low cost).

Cheers also for the Wellfleet/Eastham area. Audabon sanctuary is wonderful and it is a quieter area of the cape. Equidistant from both ocean and bay so you can easily get up for the sunrise on the ocean and the sunset over the bay.

so, it may be farther out but it is lovely. Lots of galleries and restaurants in Wellfleet. and farther out.. in Provincetown.

Around Woods Hole, the SE corner of the Cape, very good free museum/science buzz for kids. Mashpee has a great town beach, facing Martha's Vineyard. Provincetown has the "unique" lifestyle, thus good restaurants and great beaches. Chatham tends to be as crowded as any town on the Cape. Hyannis is a dump. Cotuit, near Chatham, is a great ocean-side town, if you can find a place....
