While we await the release next month of the New Jersey State Department of Education Report Card for the 1999-2000 school year, it appears there are those who would again like to talk about the 1998-1999 results.

If the score of the Columbia High School student/s ranked at the 75th percentile on the SATs was compared to the 75th percentile score of the 55 other high schools in South Orange-Maplewood School District's
socio-economic grouping (District Factor Group I) the rankings would be:

* MATH - one school had a a lower score at the 75th percentile - 55 of 56

* VERBAL - two schools had lower scores and two schools had the same score - 51 of 54

If compared with the 46 (including CHS) high schools in DFG GH, the next lowest socio-economic grouping, the rankings would be:

* MATH - seven schools had lower 75th percentile scores and three had the same as CHS - 36 of 43

* VERBAL - five schools had lower 75th percentile scores and six had the same
- 35 of 40

SAT Results - Score @ 75th percentile - 5 year summary

MATH

School SO-M DFG DFG All
Year CHS I GH NJ

1994-95 600 641 602 590

1995-96 590 640 607 590

1996-97 610 643 609 580

1997-98 630 642 611 580

1998-99 590 648 613 583

VERBAL

SO-M DFG DFG All
CHS I GH NJ

1994-95 585 613 592 570

1995-96 570 613 586 570

1996-97 570 613 584 562

1997-97 580 616 587 562

1998-99 570 616 588 563

Scores are those of the student/s whose performance places them in the 75th percentile of the group indicated. Taken from the 1998-1999 Report Card for each of the 101 schools in DFG I & GH.

DFG I refers to the socio economic group of communities in which the NJ Department of education has placed the South Orange - Maplewood District.

Some believe that CHS' overall performance should not be compared against schools in this DFG group, but rather the DFG GH (next lower group that includes Montclair and West Orange) should be used. The 75th percentile level for DFG FG in the 1998-1999 Report Card was MATH - 594; VERBAL - 573

All NJ refers to all New Jersey high school students that took the SATs including the 26 Special Needs Districts (DFG A).

Scores of Special Education and Limited English Proficient students were not included in the calculations.

Fringe - I have a question about the meaning of your statement: "Scores are those of the student/s whose performance places them in the 75th percentile of the group indicated."

What is the "group" of which these students are in the 75th percentile? Is it the SATs overall? Is it of students in the DFG? I'm just trying to understand the import of the information you are providing.

Nohero- I think the "group" refers to all Columbia students who took the SAT that year (or possibly all Columbia first time test takers that year).

Chico - I think that is one possible reading, but I was not sure. I was just trying to get a clarification about the data posted, but for some reason JTL did not want to respond to me. Then, today, I read the following at the bottom of JTL's morning message of 2/2/01: "Those with questions regarding the data above, but who do not wish to reveal their identity on the board, may call me at the number listed in the telephone directory."

I guess us "screen name" folks are not entitled to have simple questions responded to in public.

Pesky test results, again.
Facts.
If they are unalterably true, (assume the past decade really happened), what is the burden for the Board and Super?
Any takers?
