For some reason, this got no feedback on a previous posting. With all the musicians and music lovers in SOM, we must have some good info. Here's mine: 10-Rolling Stones-Madsion Square Garden sometimes in the 70's. Opening act, Stevie Wonder !!!!! 9-Buddy Guy, Rhinocerous (great 60's blue eyed soul, sadly forgotten), NRBQ, and headliners, Procol Harum-Worlds fair Pavilion, Queens N.Y.-sometimes in the 60's. 8-Concert for peace, Shea Stadium- Creedence, Steppenwolf,Poco, Al Kooper, Janis Joplin and full Tilt Boogie-Etc, Etc. 69-70?. I got tickets from Al Kooper, right after he finished his set and was leaving. 7.NRBQ- at Queens College (my Elmer Matter) with both Al Anderson and Steve Fergusen on guitar. Opening act, Jake and the Family Jewells. 72-73 6-XTC-Hurrah's NYC. Before they stopped touring.79-80 5.David Bowie with opening act(unknown at the time), Roxy Music. , Rainbow Theater, London, 72. 4.Al Koopers 50th B-Day Bash at the Bottom Line-With Rekooperaters, Original Blues Project and Original Blood Sweat and Tears-9 years ago 3.Soft Machine,Chambers Bros., Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Singer Bowl, New York , 67-68 (can't beat those 60's). 2.Frank Zappa and the Mothers, Fillmore East, I think 72. This is when he recorded the White Live at the Fillmore L.P. For their 2nd encore, Frank brought out Joni Mitchell and she recited really graphic, dirty poetry while the Mothers jammed and Frank kept telling Joni, to "Do It" to the audience. Classic. 1. Beatles at Shea Stadium-My older sister took me, I could barely hear but it was the BEATLES-enuff said. Now that I wrote this I forgot Joni Mitchell with Tim harden at Queens College and YES, I did see Sprinsteen (River Tour MSG) and he was great. TOO many to list.

I think if you search (YEA DAVE FOR BRINGING BACK THE SEARCH) you will see that there is a rather lengthy thread about very first concerts and most cosmic live music moment. Both of which morphed into top ten lists, if I am not mistaken, and there is a very real chance that I am. P.S. thats lots of nostalgia there man. Seen anything good in the last 30 years??

See I knew ya could do it SOM. Good lists. I actually saw some of the shows listed. The Greenwich Village Folk festival was really good. I think in 87, Mark Johnson also played backed by the Roaches and some other Village names, he's a really good singer songwriter who wrote, King of Love (Dave Edmunds did it and local act the Jaybirds sometimes do it on uke's). Being a Queens boy, I was planning on seeing the Monkee's with opening act Jimi Hendrix but my dad grounded me that weekend for one reason or another. Garland Jeffries is still doing good work and a friend of mine is now the keyboard player in his band. Cindy Lauper used to come down to see a band I was in called Get Wet when she was in Blue Angel. Our drummer was friendly with their guitarist Arthur Neilsen who is now playing with Shamika (sp?) Copeland (Johnny Copelands daughter) he's better than ever.

Wow - lots of Dead on here. Until now, I was under the impression that folks around here had good taste. Please tell me the Deadheads are all in Maplewood! What do deadheads say when they run out of dope? "What is this awful music?" |

Kind of a cheap shot at the Dead but everyone's entitled to their opinion. I have gone back and forth on my opinion of the Dead as a live act. I tend to feel their early,"jams" were better and more creative then their later one's, which sometimes got a bit aimless. One thing for sure (in my opinion) they wrote some classic tunes, this I'll never take away from them. |
