I've got a whole bunch of debris that was left behind our garage. Any thoughts on a good waste removal company?

When we needed to have some debris removed, we called around and found that South Mountain Disposal still has the best rates. You can arrange with their office for extra pickups on regular trash days, or you can fill a dumpster.

You can also look in the News Record, Chicelo (SP?) were great. They came right on time, gave a competitive bid, and took everything away.

Themp -
This goes way beyond bulk pick-up, but thanks for the heads up. And thanks to everyone who responded.

We now have a reputation on our street for the giant pile of junk we heaved onto our curb on bulk trash day. We hauled it out in the stormy winds and rain! We weren't sure if they'd reject any of our junk, but they graciously handled all of it. We still have some left over, so we might be making another trip to the dump ourselves.

I was shopping for a dumpster once, started calling places in the phone book. I started at the top and called about eight places, all the exact same price. So I went to the bottom of the list and called one of them. Same price, then the guy who answered the phone said “You don’t get it do you”. It was the same guy every time.

It turned out to be about 500 bucks for a 20 yd dumpster.

Recent dumpster quote for a 10 yarder:

South Orange Disposal: $410 (Essex County, 7-9 days) Flat Rate 973-762-3880

Garden State Waste Mgmt: $150 + $65 per ton (10 days) 973-822-8999

... different prices, different people answering the phone.

Also, consider carefully WHERE you plan to put the dumpster. If you have a non-asphalt driveway with at least 30 feet of vertical clearance, you can put it on your property for no charge (at least in MW). You may want to put plywood underneath to protect your driveway.

If you have low clearance and/or an asphalt driveway, put it in the street. It can sink into asphalt.

Sure you have to :
(a) get a $25, 7-day permit from MW town hall;
(b) add the township to your homeowners policy; and
(c) put lights on the dumpster at night.

But you still get to use your driveway.

Which reminds me, I need to call our agent and have the town removed from our policy ...

PS: If the dumpster is in the street, put a tarp over it -- otherwise passersby will drop stuff into it -- including large, heavy items.

You should call Fred Hodges' rubbish removal: (908) 688-2911

Nice guy ... neat, reliable and reasonable. I've used him many times. Everyone calls me back to thank me for giving out his name ..

He is written about in several posts on MOL in archives.

I'll second the rec for Fred. I've used him several times and will again. He's taken everything from the wall to wall carpeting we ripped out, to the junk left in the garage, a couple of old toilets and sinks, to the concrete rubble from the 10 feet of sidewalk I took out.

Thanks, Marken. What order do you do those things in? Permit before homeowner policy? Or Homeowner Policy first? Do you have to physically go to town hall during business hours? How do you prove that you have put the township on the policy?

Why do you still want all the bother and expense of a dumpster?

We used Fred too.

It was less $$$ than a dumpster - and he took away
all the stuff we loaded into our 2 car garage, floor to ceiling.

Nice man. We'll use him again. And the best part - hassle free!

Themp -- sounds like there many options out there, but here's my dumpster-related advice.

First, be sure you can "park it" w/o obstructions. As long as you don't have any low hanging wires or branches in front of your house the dumpster company will be able to set it down, nice & gently.

The order, in reply to your question:

#1: Schedule your dumpster with whomever you like so you know what dates it will be in front of your house.

#2: Call your insurance company to add the town (Township of Maplewood, 574 Valley St, MW, 07040) as an "additional insured" for at least $500K in liability. S/O may have different requirements.

#3: Get proof of insurance from your company/agent and take it to the town hall (or have the agent/company fax it to the town hall directly)

#4: Bring your $25 (check I think) with the proof of insurance and you'll get a 7 day permit. If you need it for more than 7 days, check w/the town, it should be renewable. You do have to go during busines hours 9-4:30.

#5: Then find some lights to put on the dumpster when it arrives. I bought "CAUTION" tape, 4 battery-powered red-flashing bike lights, 8 bungee cords and a blue tarp w/grommets. Extra cost: approx $50, but most of it is reusable for other projects.

#6: Keep your permit handy (or post it in the door).

#7: When the dumpster arrives put on the tarp, wrap it w/caution tape and mount the lights -- you only need them on at night.

You can usually add anything you want while it's there (which is why you tarp it -- your "neighbors" could do the same thing, and if you're paying by the ton, then you're paying for their garbage.

Good luck.
