We went to SO Grill last night, and just thought I'd post our experience and thoughts. We were pleasently surprised by the atmosphere and look. Very comfortable and family friendly, yet could see going there without kids too. The service was good. Staff was nice and pleasant and not a long wait.

While everything seemed to be on the up we then ordered our food. I got the Chicken Marsala and unfortunatly was very disappointed. It was basically, grilled chicken with mushrooms with a marsala sauce poured over it. (When I ate the chicken alone without sauce it had no flavor) Considering Chicken Marsala is a very basic dish (something I make at home) I was surprised at how bland it was. My husband got the tuna which he reports was over cooked and also disappointing.

I was going to say something to the staff, and should have not so much to complain but just to let them be aware, but didn't. Anyway, just curious to hear other people's expereinces. We probably wont give up hope yet, maybe it was just what we ordered or just a bad night for them.

We went to South Orange Grill on Friday night, and were really disappointed. The service was okay, nothing great, but I thought the atmosphere was terrible. The decor didn't know where it was going, and the lights were VERY bright.

After hearing bad experiences from many people, we thought we would give it a try. We were not impressed, and are in no hurry to go back. They had better get their act together, or I don't see it lasting very long. There was virtually no one in there at 10:00 at night.

Thanks for the information. Now I'm thinking it's probably not worth a second try. Too bad. I guess after having been to Dancing Goat and being very pleased I had my hopes up for another good restaurant in SO. By the way, after we left the SO Grill very disappointed, we ended up at the Goat for a smoothie and cc cookie to satisfy my taste buds

I've heard nothing but bad reviews for this place so we won't even give it a try. Looks like this enterprise isn't going to last very long.. too bad. A great location, nice layout, I have to wonder why the owners don't invest in experienced chefs and staff?

What's the deal with South Orange business owners. How could the owner spend so much time (years it seems) and obviously money to realize yet another mediocre to sub-par establishment whose only appeal would seem to be for Seton Hall students because it serves beer. Let's hope it goes out of business soon so that a more sophisticated owner can try to make a go of it. There are people in the town who are actually interested in a drink AND good food.

joso: I agree with you regarding the Grille. Please don't condemn all S. Orange Business owners. Some of them try very hard and have places that we should all try and go to.

We had the same disappointing experience. Met the owner, nice enough fellow, but he certainly erred in the hiring of his kitchen and waitstaff. Food was mediocre, at best, and service was poor (i.e. meal brought out immediately after salad, food not cooked to order, side dish never appeared, had to get up and search for waitress, etc.). We'll be fair and give 'em a second chance in another month or two... if they're still in business.

Well it appears that the South Orange Grille is on its last legs. Employees haven’t been paid for a while, their quitting left and right. The Restaurant Manger has resigned, and as of yesterday the brooms, mops, napkins, and even toilet paper have been repossessed. As of Monday they stopped serving dinner Mon-Wed, can’t imaging that they can open with out being able to clean the floors.

So it looks as if the place will be closing and that we well see another coming soon sign.

All lights were out and the place was closed on Sunday night (around 7:00 PM).

If the rumor is true and they go under, can we hope for something better? The space has been renovated and has a liquor license.

What would you like to see in the space?

I personally wouldn't mind a great steak house.

Steak house sounds good to me! Something like a Ruths Chris? Its a shame the current owners didn't invest in a good chef and compentent staff. I had a bad feeling when the bar was open long before they started serving dinner or lunch.

I think something like Arthur's -- less pricey than Ruths Chris -- would be great!

They aren’t open on Sunday nights anymore. The repo happened Wed afternoon so It would be interesting to know if they’re open today.

FYI, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse may be coming to Summit. The Grand Summit Hotel is in discussion with them as a replacement to the old Hunt Club Grill.

SOG going out of business is the best news. It was an embarassment to the town that ater putting in so much time and money, this is all the ownere could come up with.

Let's pray someone with a little bit of vision takes it on.

It is too bad that South Orange Grille went down so fast. I guess they read "Mistakes to avoid" and made every one of them in the book
