I'm looking to do some type of volunteer work once or twice a week. Ideally, I'd like to work with either the mentally disabled, or with the elderly. Does anyone know of an agency or facility that can help me get in touch with the right people. Thanks.

Hi Sam -- there's a web site called Idealist.org that lists volunteer jobs around the country. There's also a web site called Helping.org that lists volunteer opportunities too. You could also try the United Way of Essex County in Newark for suggestions. Good luck!

If you like doing your research on the web, try www.servenet.com, I believe you can plug in your zip and they'll provide a listing of opportunities. Not sure how good the site is, but I know there were high hopes for it. Also, there's a website for the New Jersey Commission on National and Community Service (probably can be found through www.state.nj.us) I think they list volunteer agencies by county.

I've read that JESPY House in South Orange is looking for volunteers. They aid a population of learning disabled and mentally disabled young adults. Located 65 Academy Street, their phone number is 762-6909.

The Valerie Fund on Millburn Ave. is looking for some volunteers. Terrific group!

An excellent and very rewarding volunteer job is to work as a Patient Unit Volunteer at a local hospital. Most of the patients are the elderly and they certainly appreciate having someone "hold their hand". Another possibility is to help out at a nearby nursing home. They often need volunteers during their craft or social hours. Sometimes the interview process and training is a drag, but you just have to hang in through it to get to the good stuff. It takes time for the nurses to get to know and trust you, so you should commit yourself to the time this takes. Good luck and enjoy!
