NinersMan, I know that they stop serving food at 10 p.m., at least on weekdays. I found this out when I went the other night, starving, at 10:40. Doh!

Is the "Gate" a new pub or just another Ok restaurant, who's main cooking utensil is a frier. After a round of golf with 3 non Maplewoodians, I convinced them to take the 15min ride to Mwood to try the new pub.Arriving @ 4:oo pm much to our dismay we found it closed , sporting a crude sign informing us they would be open @ 5:30pm , thats when area restaurants open , not Irish themed bars. Unfortunately the 5:30 opening wasn't a one day thing, the following day "Giant home opener" my brother & I found the same sign , off to O'Rielly's.

I was there with the family last night for dinner. The food was very good, just what you would hope for at an Irish Pub.

I heard the owner mention they'd be opening for lunch beginning this Saturday and continue that 7 days a week.

I can't believe the number of people waiting for the pub to open at 5:30. My wife and I thought to check it out last Saturday, found it didn't open till 5:30, and there was a line. I refuse to wait in line for a pub - I don't know what's up with the rest of you folks!

Ended up going to Cent Anni (which was open before 5:30) had a FANTASTIC meal created by chef, drinks, and best of all NO WAITING.

I have read the message boards for along time and never had time to participate. i've been in the restaurant business for 25 years and just love how critical people can be with new restaurants. You have no idea what it take to get one running. I have helped open 15 restaurants in NJ and NYC and I hear the same thing. As for Chasm the guy in the kitchen he used to work for James Laird at Serenade, Bruce Johnson of 28 and Trap Rock and Barry Squire of girafe. the chef at Centani worked at the Manor, big deal! I'm not taking shots at anybody but lets be realistic these guys have been open for three weeks. you have a complaint 6 months down the road then I will side with you.

My two cents: I wouldn't be keen on queueing up just for a beer, but the food at the Gate is 1000 times better than your average pub grub, definitely worth the wait for dinner -- this is no Bennigans or Bunnies (which I happen to like, by the way). When we went two weeks ago we had the potato leek soup, the shrimp appetizer (a special that day, served with the scrumptious sauce they usually cook their mussels in), the cheddar bacon burger, and the shepherd's pie, and everything was first rate, fresh as can be and absolutely delicious. I'd eat there again in a heartbeat, and advise any you naysayers to try it yourself before you preemptively decide it's overrated.

I agree with amandacat... as I've mentioned in other posts, in our experiences there, the Gate was still working out some glitches (but that is common for any new enterprise). It promises to be a great addition to Maplewood Center.

Marilyn and I wanted to go to SJG but the wait was too long. So we went to Camelita's for a great Mexican meal. Got some Chilean red wine around the corner. Kind of freaked us out to see Dave and then Jamie go by the window within 5 minutes. Who was piloting Maplewood Online? Was MOL on automatic pilot?

We went today also with some visiting friends. I didn't realize it hadn't been open for lunch previously. Food was very good and I'd certainly go back for lunch. I'll pass on the nighttime queue, though!

Rather than skim 200+ comments which may have answered this question, I'll ask:
How did SJG get its liquor license? Was there a license unused? Is there a difference between package stores and restaurants which can serve booze?
Not being critical since we haven't braved the crowds yet, just curious.

I heard that they bought it from a Seton Hall fraternity a few years ago and have since been waiting for an appropriate site to become available.

Don't think a S.O. license is transferrable to Maplewood.
Maplewood has a finite amount of licenses avaialable; it's based on number of licenses per capita.
I believe the SJG license was formerly owned by the Savidis Liquor store people (now "Pop Pop's" shoes).
Although Savidis only had package goods, I think the license was of the type to permit on site sales as well.
But in all honesty I may have this about 75% right.

Jab - I don't believe fraternities can have a liquor license. At least half the membership is under 21.. it just doesn't make sense. Although, come to think of it, SHU had an on-campus pub a number of years ago. But in any case, can the license transfer across town lines?

I heard there was a bar called the Frat House on Burnett or somewhere and the license is from there...that might explain jab's hearing that it was from a fraternity.

There was a bar called the Frat House on Springfield ... It is now called Hathaway's. I believe it's the same license ... The license SJG uses came from another place on Springfield Avenue ... Not sure what the name of the place was. It was near Maplewood Tire ... Italian restaurant ... No, you cannot transfer licenses from town to town ... Yes, a license to serve is different than a retail license, but there are licenses (Type C?) that combine both. This is what The Wine Emporium has, which is how they can open a martini bar in the old Neicy's site ...
