Harold has won the "Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. Townie has won for the longest and the most posts.

Small minds talk about other people - Great minds talk of ideas.

Chris,
I really hope you will open your mind to the idea that there is a whole 'nuther way to look at this 'real names on the board question'.

I'm very careful never to post anything to this board that i wouldn't be proud to put my name on. On the contrary, i put a lot of time and thought into some of my posts and think i have done some of my better writing here (heh...talk about setting the bar real low).

However, this board is not just public to the members of the maplewood community...this board is public to the WHOLE WORLD. I'm listed in the phone book. Put my name up here and any crazy, anywhere in the world, can give me a ring..send me mail, maybe even look up my social security number and play a few games with my identity.

There are little bots trolling the net and these pages will turn up under searches for the word 'racist' for a LONG time to come, not to mention a million other words we've used in these posts.

There are an infinite number of avenues by which some crazy (is there anyone who really doesn't believe they are out there?) person could find their way to my post...take offense...and put me into his sights.

Or maybe you really aren't afraid of the nutcases (and, btw....you live in a metropolitan area where a good 15 million of them are within driving distance or a quick train ride)....but what about the phenomena of 'data mining'? That's where you go into a database and let it tell you things instead of asking it queries. Like it can find that your name is associated with the word racist 60 times without you asking for that information.

I've seen psychological profiles done from a collection of posts that were so accurate that the posters never uttered another word. They weren't asked permission before the study was done, either, and they weren't asked before someone published them on the internet...again...for the entire world to access.

Ever hear about the guy who got a CEO spot and went back and erased 10,000 posts at the 'Well' over a period of 10 years because now he was in the public eye and every political opinion he had shared for 10 years (long before he ever dreamed he would be in the public eye) would be freely available to be quoted and taken out of context?

There is just a lot more going on here than 'stand up and be counted'.

There is a time and a place for everything and the internet is not a good place for people to be free with their names.

At least that is the way i see it.

My words stand on their own.

(and tip...i'm not certain but i should probably add a 'multiple post alert'. This issue is very important to me.)

As for using real names on the board, this would be nearly impossible for us to verify. How could we stop people from using someone else's name? The only possible way to do this would be for us to send everyone in town their own username and password via snail mail. Then if anyone out of town wanted to talk here we would need a full time person answering the phone and personally sending out usernames and passwords to them, after verification.

We should not jump to conclusions as to who people are on this board. Remember, one of our posting policies is that you can't- Make personal attacks. If you have, your posting privileges will be revoked.

Accusations? Personal attacks? Name calling?

Aruba18, I'm waiting for an apology as well as an apology to Harold Bobrow.

Dave, you're being very selective on whom you give warnings to......and what was that post last night [that was edited] about checking my profile discussing what letter my last name starts with or doesn't start with?

Euclidean, thank you for seeing my post for what they were....I'm just the messenger.
