I am interested in putting cafe-style (1/2 height) interior shutters in my sunroom. I have seen some houses around here with cafe shutters and I am wondering, can anyone recommend a vendor? Thanks in advance. |

I just researched endlessly plantation shutters and found the cheapest are at http://www.smithandnoble.com at $19.95 Sq/Ft. We also lucked out as they had a promotion with free shipping and deferred billing in August. I'm on their email list and have received several promotional emails lately i.e. buy 2 get one free so it might be worth it to sign up. I have full length shutters but you can do cafe style. Download the measuring instructions and follow them very carefully. The shutters are made to order and take about a month. They come with explicit installation instructions and are relatively easy to install. They are solid wood - you can get swatches for colors. We're very happy with the end result. |

Both Home Depot and Expo do custom shutter measurement, fabrication and installations. One of our neighbors is quite happy with the result. Yeah, I know Home Depot. However, they do stand behind their work. |

thanks for the recs. eliz, I used Smith & Noble for other window treatments and was ultimately disappointed, especially for the price, but will definitely keep in mind your good experience on shutters in particular. bobk: any idea on cost of Home Depot/Expo shutters? thanks a ton!! |

Sorry 1-2, I have no idea. We saw the truck delivering and the person installing and asked the neighbor, who indicated she was pleased. If you are lucky as far as the size of your windows is concerned, you might be able to buy shutters off the shelf at HD or a similar store and save a bundle. Back in the last ice age that is what my wife and I did for our first apartment, although I think we got them at Pergament, as HD didn't exist back when Mastadons roamed NJ.

$35/sf?! when Smith and Noble is $20/sf?! with free shipping? Ok, granted, you have to install yourself, but my husband works pretty cheap, you know? BobK's idea is a good one, too - see if I can buy off the shelf. for outside mounting, this just may work... I looked at timberlane.com and have requested and will look at the info they send -- but they do not stain or paint the shutters, apparently, and I am not too interested in staining them myself. we had to stain 6 large double-hung windows in our living room, along with a new bay window, and by the end, I JUST HATED STAINING. the thought of doing that with all the detail on the shutters really makes me cringe. thanks, all! |

Forget the cafe shutters. We finally got rid of the last of ours and replaced them with bottom/up pleated translucent blinds. They give privacy, allow views out the top, let in light, and do not stick out into the room. Smith and Noble has them and they are simple to install. |
