Being new to Maplewood and not having children, I don't know what the schedule is for sales of Girl Scout cookies. I'm assuming we have Girl Scouts in the area.

When is the next sale?

Please feel free to contact me at njjoseph@aol.com when they are available, and you can count me in for a few boxes.

Thanks!

Some girls came by our house the other night and my husband ordered a few boxes - unfortunately he's in big trouble because he didn't order Samoas!

To Njjoseph and others,

The cookie order taking time is about up. It generally runs for 2-3 weeks each January, with delivery in March.

However, if you or anyone else missed out on placing an order, you will have another chance. Girl Scouts will be setting up tables offering cookies for sale on the weekends and/or in the evenings at various locations including the Maplewood village and the train station in March.

To other Girl Scouts,

Please remember that Girl Scout rules strictly forbid advertising or soliciting for cookie sales via the Internet - including message board postings or broadcast emails.

Just curious - why the no-Internet rule? (I would have loved to use the Internet, when I sold them door-to-door, years ago.

I do not know the official rationale for the rule. However, I speculate that it probably has to do with safety issues related to dealing with people you don't know. There could also be concerns about giving an unfair advantage to girls who have Internet access. Perhaps there are other reasons, as well.

Girl Scout rules are also pretty clear that girls should only visit the homes of people they know and younger Girl Scouts must be accompanied by an adult when they are selling, so I think this goes hand in hand with those rules, which reflect the organization's primary concern for safety of its members.

Since this policy was made very clear in the materials we received this year, I thought it would be useful to repeat it in the context of this posting.

My sister sent an email, to family members only, that her daughter is selling GS cookies this year. Does this violate the rule? Just curious.

I don't believe that the family email is a violation, at least if my speculated reasons for the rule are correct.

The prohibition in the rule is against web advertisements and "broadcast emails", if I recall correctly. We also sent out a couple of emails to a few people. I think I'll try to get an official answer on that one for next year, however, and when I learn something I'll post it here for anyone who may be interested.

Well, I think that safety concerns about "advertising" on a message board can be alleviated by having the parent with the child at the time of transaction. This could be in a neutral place, i.e. at the train station, or it could be at the home of the purchaser.

I think that the advantage of a child advertising on the internet, while it may be unfair for certain prize considerations, is not all that bad for the troop as a whole. However, if I don't know about the cookies, I can't buy 'em, and believe me, I want to buy 'em!

Njjoseph -

I don't disagree with your response to safety concerns, but if the Girl Scouts are erring on the side of caution, I have to support them in that, even though I would certainly like my child and her troop, as well as mine (different troop), to be able to take advantage of the Internet also. And, as I mentioned, those were only speculations on my part. I haven't yet been able to get the scoop on the official rationale for this.

As I mentioned in my first response, if you spend any time at all in the Maplewood village or at the train station (and probably similar locations in South Orange) during the weekends and/or evenings in March, you will have a hard time missing the Girl Scouts who will have their tables set up and be selling cookies to passersby in the heavily trafficked areas.

At that time, I'm sure you could establish a relationship with one of the troops or their members and get on their list as a future customer.

If you haven't found any cookies by about March 15th, post again, and I'll find a way to get some to you without getting in trouble with the rules.

... And we just thought this was a "non-controversial" topic :-)

I hope I didn't turn this into a controversial topic! ;-)

I'm at the train station everyday, almost always at 5:30, waiting for the jitney. I don't know how you set up shop, but if you can do it in front of the jitney stand so we can pay quickly, we wouldn't miss the jitney and have to wait 30 mins. for the next. Just a suggestion. See you then!
