I want to aerate my lawn this fall and am wondering if it would be easier to rent a lawn aerator for about $40 per half day or if any landscapers will do it for you for about the same price. Any advise or experience with this?

The usual advise is to get a couple of neighbors to go in on this with you, cutting the cost.

I am assuming that you are talking about the machine with hollow spikes that pulls up plugs from the lawn. These are big and heavy and transport can be an issue if you don't have a truck.

You may also want to thatch the lawn in conjunction with aerating, in which case a landscaper would be a better choice. Plus, aerating isn't a very expensive service. Have you gotten any estimates?

I'm not sure if I should go the landscaper or lawn maintenance (Chemlawn, etc.) route?

My experience with chemlawn has not been good. I've found you get better service with a local (non-franchise) business. There are plenty of them around, and as the mowing season comes to a close, they'll get a bit more hungry for business.

I had my lawn aerated at my other house -- but a portion of drain pipe (ungerground, for the gutters) must have risen up over the years -- and the pipe was punctured in a couple of spots.

Sooner or later I would have had to dig up and rebury the pipe anyway.

Just a caution -- there could be pipes, wires, etc. that are not exactly where you expect them!

Pete
