I have been fooling around with the idea of running a Maplewood Hunt, and thought I might first toss out the idea to see if anyone would be interested in participating. I've enjoyed Hunts all around the country, and in general they work like this: Teams of four or five get together for the purpose of solving puzzles. In the case of the Maplewood Hunt, these puzzles would probably be spread around town, so some walking from one location to the next would be necessary. All of the puzzle answers fit into a meta-puzzle, which itself must be solved -- revealing, perhaps, a phone number, or a location. The first team to call this number or reach this location would be the winner. What kind of puzzles are we talking about here? Not crossword puzzles, or jigsaw puzzles, although elements of both might creep in at some point or another. Hunt puzzles tend to be very broad and visual, emphasizing the desire to get teammates talking and brainstorming with one another. The best Hunt puzzles seem utterly mystifying at first, but lead to an enormously satisfying AHA! when the solution is found. I would probably have a small entry fee to cover my own costs, and to provide a prize for the winners. The Hunts I've participated in have been a lot of fun -- over 30,000 people enjoyed themselves in the Tropic Hunt, run in Miami by the humor columnist Dave Barry. And Maplewoodians seem to be a smart bunch of folks. If you're game, let me know -- you can post here or e-mail me at eric@ericberlin.com. If it turns out there is interest in an event like this, I'll begin preparations, hopefully for a target date in April or May. |

I think West Orange had something like this recently. Sounds like fun. Would there be divisions , as in kids, HS/College, adult, senior citizens? |

As for divisions -- who knows? Depends on how many people want to participate. I'll see how the idea evolves. |
