Found good rates available through LoanSearch.com, which is a collaboration of NJ local banks who have good rates but low marketing budgets. Office is in Montclair, but there is an 800 number posted on the web site. They are quite helpful.

Peter DeVico was great for us at Eastern Mortgage, (908) 497-9700. He knows what he's doing and is honest (to goodness!)

A friend of mine, Joe Farella, owns American United Mortgage in Mountainside. He is top notch. I used to be in the business myself and would not recommend anyone else. (way too many bad apples in this business!!) He is very knowledgeable, his staff is excellent, and his rates are wonderful!

Definately use a personal referral when it comes to getting a mortgage (purchase or refi). You would be CRAZY to do the online thing, other than to search for rates. And even those sites aren't very accurate. Many do the "bait and switch thing". Plus, numbers of banks/brokers are linked to one site and you end up unnecessarily sharing your personal information with a number of institutions. Did you know they ALL pull your credit report?? That is dangerous, not to mention lowers your credit scores and makes you look like a questionable borrower. No thank you!!! That's BAD NEWS!

Joe is very reputable and professional. His number is (908) 233-5353. Let me know if you need any additional information.

I was very happy with Jay Carldon at Norwest for Mortgages 908 709 3396. He took care of quite a complex situation for us very quickly and easily.

We also used loansearch.com. They are not like eloan.com or other online services that mamabear rightly warns against. They are a consortium of small NJ banks. You give them some basic info and they refer you to one bank that has the best rate for you. Their rate beat everything else I saw including a cousin who is a mortgage broker. (As he explained brokers are adding a charge for their services in helping you through the process so you will pay more than you would going directly to a bank.) I actually used their 800 number rather than doing it online. Good Luck.

Allied Mortgage right here in town was AMAZING! The service was outright excellent. I was truly amazed. My husband and me were "difficult" cases but Cheryl and Brian remained positive and we now have a mortgage witha great rate. Their number is 973-762-7842.

I would second the recommendation for Allied. Brian Gorden was very helpful and professional.
