I just moved into my first house and was wondering if anyone had some advice on wiring. I'd like to get cable into two other places in the house (enters on North side of house, need to get to south side).

I have plaster walls and cielings and am worried bout making a mess, but I also don't want to run the line along the walls. Any suggestions?

I get one feed form outside into the basement, and one into the 2nd floor bedroom. I was thinking about running from teh attic down to south bedrooms, but maybe there is a better way? Anyone have any links of this type of project?

What floor do you want to run the wire?

1st floor is easy as you can pop up from the basement any place you wish.

2nd floor, I took the attic route. In most cases I was able to use a long drill with 3'extentions to drill down the wall thru the fire block and pull my wire in that way.

Outside walls on the low eve side are not that easy. On that wall I had to drill 3 holes in thru the plaster. One high at the header, one mid wall at the fire block and one low at the cable exit point. Then I had to patch and paint the plaster.

The cable needs to get patched into two bedrooms on the 2nd floor. The attic method seems more problematic, but the shortest distance. The basement, I imagine, would entail drilling up throgh two floor, via a closet or something.

Currently, i get a feed in on the second floor, which means, I would have to split from that feed, drill up to the attic, then drill down again for the bedrooms.

Anyone know even who the best types of professionals are to consult? In order to prevent this in the future I would probably want to run some sort of conduit....

Rick --

You may find you have a "chase" of sorts already that will enable you to run wires easily.

First -- by the chimney or fireplace -- you might be able to easily fish a line to the basement from the attic. I had a house where the waste pipes were also an easy way to fish lines through.

Another option -- are there closets "stacked" on the first and 2nd floors? If you can find that -- then you need to drill through to the basement, and then through the 2nd floor.

Just a caution -- I wouldn't run 110 volt wire by the chimney or pipe "chase" -- just telephone, Tv, etc. 110 volt wires need to be secure, not dangling (so you may want to run those inside a closet). (and best practice would say even TV or phone wires should be secure...but...)

Good luck

Pete

Pete,
Thanks for the suggestions! The chimney area runs almost directly up the center of our home and would be ideal. There are closets on either sides fo the chimney on the 1st and 2nd floor, so chances are, there could be a "chase". I will definitely investigate...
