During the past year or so the FAA changed flight patterns at EWR to accommodate more flights and to conflict less with the JFK/LGA traffic. Therefore more flights take off heading north with a sharp left turn over Newark to head west and south. That puts Maplewood right in the path of these flights. I've been on a few and have passed right over the Mplwd/SO area. |

Am I wierd? (please don't respond to that question) I don't mind the noise. Usually it is late and they come in real low and the whole house shakes -- I love it! I do worry about a plane smashing into the neighborhood. How about those helicopters? |

You should have heard the noise about 10 to 11 years ago-much much worse than now. |

Airplane noise sure beats Con Ed jackhammering into the street and music video shoots!!! |

Alida -- were we neighbors once? I agree. Sure beats that sound when big trucks over the Con Ed plate in the road. |

I received the FAA form letter, once, about a year after lodging the complaint. They really, really feel our pain. DWM |

Algebra2--I forgot about the drunken hordes emptying out of the club on the corner at 3am. I loved that almost as much as my upstairs neighbor's electric guitar tirades. |

Now Algebra2, that`s not fair to Eyespy and Toad. They said the bickering only happened the one time and they apologized for disturbing you. |

so, here's the deal on where the planes are coming from. Maplewood sits directly on the the IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) Approach to Teterboro. so, its not Morristown at all, and Newark's traffic is usually at higher altitudes. Teterboro is the busiest "little" airport in the nation. be thankful you're on the approach path, and not the departure when the engines are screaming. Morristown's traffic doesn't even come close to here, the airspace is already congested enough. Newark's traffic has a few exceptions. First, there is the approach to Runway 11-29, which runs east-west. this runway is usually only used for smaller planes, and traffic usually stays over the east side of t- OOPS - over Route 78. Another exception occurs during overnight hours when planes are allowed to make visual approaches into Newark. during the day, traffic is so heavy that everything is on a distinct approach path to the main runways, either taking them over Sayreville or Bergen County. at night, pilots are allowed to take short cuts, and turn the computers off, and actually fly the plane (something they should stay current on..). so, those are the larger planes you see gliding over Downtown Newark. finally, mostly in the evening hours, you will see the larger jumbo jets departing Newark for Europe. those are climbing from south-to-north and are usually in the 3,000-4,000 foot range. but as a resident, I think things have only gotten better around here. they've lengthened runways at Newark, allowing traffic to get airborne sooner and climb faster. they've pushed departure traffic into Staten Island. there comes a point where we just have to realize where we live. if we lived across from a firehouse, would we complain about the sirens? |

oops...and sorry..to address the original post, about the increase in noise within the last month... I'm taking an educated guess here, but I would blame it on the weather. January was a terrible month: snowy, rainy, and cloudy. IFR conditions prevailed much more frequently than usual, which legally forces pilots to use the IFR Approach. when its lousy weather, Maplewood will rarely hear a plane from Newark...but we'll get almost every plane that comes to Teterboro from the west or south.... |

JohnJ - Sorry to disagree, but there are times I have been on a plane leaving Newark where I had a terrific view of Maplewood, and could practically see right down my street. |

I looked down out of the airplane leaving Newark and I saw my neighbor's dog pooping on my front yard. And I had thought it was my own dog. Guess where my dog goes now? |

Thanks Ken, but I've already filled out my appeals form, and that was my number one a) and b) on my appeals list. 1. a) Remove airplane view from my assessment. 2. b) Lower assessment significantly due to front yard land mines. What's HVD? |

Mem - lol! Johnjdel - thanks for all the details! Are you an air traffic controller? I realize I live close to an airport and I expect a reasonable(?) amount of noise. Since I work at home I am here pretty much all the time and there was a distinct surge in the amount of noise - especially low flying jets that pretty much shake the foundation. I hear a lot of the smaller planes as well and it really doesn't bother me - those are the ones I presume are heading for Teterboro. Having said all that I haven't heard a jet in several days ... |

Eliz- I'm not an air traffic controller, but I make my living in the local skies. Nohero- of course, there is the occasional exception to the rule. And I'm not saying there aren't planes that overfly Maplewood. Just two points: When you fly over Maplewood, you're probably a lot higher than you think. Also, given our proximity to EWR, it could be a lot worse. There has been dramatic improvement in the last 10 years alone. For example, EWR agreed that they would not let jets depart from Runway 29 (unless they absolutely have to), which would send planes westbound on 78. Now, only small commuter planes use that runway. Utilizing that runway for all types of planes would reduce the perennial delays at the airports considerably, but they don't do it in the interest of noise abatement. Again though, back to the original question addressing the increase of noise in January: there have been no official FAA changes in flight routes. Blame it on the weather, and blame most of it on Teterboro. |
