We're taking advantage of the special ticket prices on Broadway shows available in Jan/Feb and taking our kids to their first show. The theatre is in the mid-40's. Any ideas where we might go to dinner before the theatre? We're going to a Friday night show. Thanks |

My 12 yr old daughter went to "Annie Get YOur Gun" at the Marquis last weekend with the Girl Scouts. They ate at a place she said was called "John's Pizzeria", described as formerly a church, with stained glass windows...She took pictures because it was "so beautiful." !! |

If you're meat-eaters, Virgil's Real BBQ is a good place to go, but you need reservations and you should get there on the early side. It's on W. 44th between 6th & B'way. I think there's a bunch of good restaurants affiliated with Kids' Night on Broadway that let kids eat either for free or half price. There should be a list, which you should check out and then check Zagat's or ask around about the individual restaurants. We did the Kids' Night on Broadway thing last year, and I honestly don't remember where we ate, but I do remember that there was a discount for kids. |

Hold on to your ray-gun and take the kids to Mars 2112! It is a real show stopper in the world of kids. It's at 51st and Broadway and does not accept reservations (unfortunately). It does offer a 5 minute rocket ride to the table - seriously - you go into a flight simulator and it pitches and yaws and the door opens on the other side and you're there! The food was OK but the kids will never forget the visit. Go to their web site at Mars2112.com (I think). It will give you an panoramic view of the Martian interior. Be warned we walked right in - not a minutes wait - on a Saturday at 3:00 in the afternoon. When we left the line to get in looked to be at least 90 minutes long. That would be torture to make kids wait that long! |

I second the vote for John's pizzeria on 44th. Good crispy crust pizza & spinach rolls, beautiful atmoshere, plenty of room for the kids, but don't waste your money on the salad. It was nothing to speak of. Carmine's could also be fun, but the wait is usually HOURS long. |

If you're adventurous, try Cabana Carioca (on 54th or 55th)great Brazilian cuisine, not too expensive, and fun. Great fries for the kids and large variety. Also, The Hourglass is fun - check the Zagat guide online for more! Have a great time! Laura |

I think Cabana Carioca is on 45th St. I remember it so well, because of 1234567: 123 W. 45th between 6th and 7th. |

For great Broadway family fun before a show - May I suggest the Stardust Diner. I think it's over on 51st and Broadway. It has a fun 50's diner atmosphere and all the waiters sing broadway show tunes. They even take requests. They also dance on the tables and the menu is very extensive. It's family fun. |

If the kids will try something different -- my absolute favorite Thai restaurant is Pongsri at 48th between 8th and Broadway. The staff is super friendly and accomidating. |

Okay, so here's what happened. We took the advice from you all, and planned to go to Johns or another close-by restaurant. Best laid plans... it was packed, as was every other kid friendly looking place nearby. We ended up at Joe Franklin's new restaurant, overpriced but okay. They made up dishes of plain pasta for the kids and only charged us $5/plate, and were very generous with the delicious bread. Mr. Franklin even came over to talk with us. I wouldn't recommend others bring their kids here, but it turned out okay. The show, Beauty and the Beast, was a big hit with both kids. My 10-yr old son was pleasantly surprised, he was set not to like it! Thanks to all for your suggestions, we'll keep them for next time. I think I hear the Music Man calling our names.... |
