We just noticed (wet) water spots on a first floor ceiling, approximately beneath a toilet. We also noticed (dry) water marks running down two walls in the same general area. We're wondering if the water streaks are from water coming in at the roof line and travelling along the wall before streaking down the wall. But then, the ceiling spot seems to be beneath or pretty close to beneath a toilet. There is no sign of a leak in the bathroom on the second floor. So, how can we figure out where the water is coming from? By the way, it has been raining for the last few hours. Thanks for any help or suggestions. |

Sometimes the obvious is the problem. It is likely that the wax seal between your toilet and the waste pipe has failed. This is, usually, a relatively simple repair so if it was my house I would start there. I say usually, because in some old houses with the original toilet there isn't a mounting flange. The toilet is set in a plaster like substance. |

It sounds like the toilet is the problem. Question: Do you have Yankee gutters? If so are they leaking?

My money is on the lead bend. Either way, I'd cut a hole in the ceiling immediatley and find out for sure. Make it a big hole. You'll have to patch it anyway. Master_Plvmber
